Post-Doctoral Fellow, Mines and NIST
About the role
The Engineering a World of Possibilities Postdoctoral Scholar/ Superconductive Electronics Material Scientist position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. This program allows Mines undergraduate and graduate students, as well as researchers with a PhD, to gain research experience alongside NIST scientists.
Responsibilities
- Design and simulation of superconductive and photosensitive circuits.
- Layout for micro-fabrication of these circuits at NIST.
- Materials analysis and fabrication of these circuits in the NIST Boulder Microfabrication Facility.
- Electrical test and characterization of circuits at cryogenic temperatures and frequencies greater than 100 GHz.
- Automation of data acquisition.
- Develop theory to explain circuit performance. Compare data with theory.
- Communicate and collaborate internally within the group and between NIST groups, as well as with external industry, academic, and government researchers.
- Present results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
- Ensure that results, protocols, software, and documentation have been archived or otherwise transmitted to the larger organization.
- Understand and follow all laboratory safety requirements.
- Prepare manuscripts and publish research findings in high-impact, refereed physics and/or engineering journals.
- Mentor junior members of the Superconductive Electronics Group in material analysis and fabrication.
Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of relevant theoretical, computational, or experimental research in a related field.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Ability to work safely in a laboratory and microfabrication clean room.
- Familiarity with multiple scripting languages.
- Ability to develop prototypes of tools to acquire and analyze data.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Josephson junction theory, fabrication, and cryogenic measurements.
- 3-5 years of experience using the Boulder Microfabrication Facility.
- Familiarity with high frequency photosensitive materials and microwave structures and measurements.
Total Rewards
$83,265 - $85,000 annual salary rate. Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
