About the role

The Information Quality Lab in the University of Wisconsin–Madison Information School seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow to conduct research in research quality, scientometrics, and metascience under the mentorship of Dr. Jodi Schneider. The position emphasizes mentoring and community support to prepare for permanent appointments both inside and outside academia. The successful candidate will collaborate with Dr. Schneider to create an individual development plan, lead and publish research, and write grant proposals in an interdisciplinary environment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, conduct, and publish research in consultation with Dr. Schneider
  • Design research projects, write grant proposals, and mentor junior researchers
  • Develop and execute a personal individual development plan to become eligible for permanent positions, guided by Dr. Schneider
  • Conduct a scoping review of the literature and develop and test scientometric indicators of epistemic integrity, methodological rigor, and innovation for the CULTIVATE project

Key Job Responsibilities

The work of postdoctoral fellows should be primarily for the appointee’s own learning and research. Tasks must be necessary and relevant to the learning program and not repetitive beyond what is required to achieve excellence. Stipends are fully taxable and trainees may be required to pay estimated taxes quarterly. The University will not withhold taxes from monthly stipend checks.

Project Context

The CULTIVATE project is led by three UW–Madison faculty members: Dr. Schneider (bibliometrics), a clinical psychologist at the Center for Healthy Minds (psychometrics), and an STS-inflected historian in the Department of Medical History and Bioethics (ethnographic and qualitative analysis to guide bibliometric development).

Required Qualifications

  • Interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Excellent critical thinking, written and spoken English, and project management skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Training and/or publications in meta-research or meta-science, such as scientometrics or data-intensive research about science
  • Training and/or publications in formal literature reviewing methodologies
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary research through scholarly publications or translational/implementation science projects
  • Interest or experience in mixed methods research
  • Interest or experience in grant writing
  • Interest or experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate student research
  • The ability to contribute to a positive, collaborative climate with students, faculty, and staff

Education

A PhD in any field (including metascience, science of science, informatics, science policy, information sciences, information studies, library & information science, computational social sciences, etc.), earned within the last 5 years.

Compensation

The expected salary for this position is $70,000 (pro-rated based on FTE).
