Port Operations Manager

About the Role

The Port Operations Manager provides a structured organization and coordinates all equipment and activity to fulfill customer operational requirements, ensuring quality, security, safety, and efficiency in accordance with operational and technical parameters. This position directs dock and terminal operations, manages equipment and personnel, and optimizes resource utilization to meet economic performance indicators.

Responsibilities

• Direct supervision of dock and terminal operations, ensuring timely completion of scheduled activities.
• Manage equipment, personnel, and supervision to optimize resource utilization and uptime.
• Establish and implement operational policies and procedures for clear decision-making guidance.
• Plan and coordinate daily operations for dock, terminal, and packaging activities.
• Determine equipment and gear requirements, ensuring proper maintenance, repair, and certification.
• Hire and manage an appropriate workforce for efficient and cost-effective operations.
• Oversee supervisory personnel, including counseling, discipline, and termination recommendations as needed.
• Ensure all staff are properly trained for their job assignments.
• Enforce productivity levels and conduct follow-up assessments using operational reports.
• Monitor worksites for compliance with Health & Safety rules, addressing hazards immediately.
• Enforce PPE usage and distribution for jobs requiring additional protective equipment.
• Investigate and report damages and liabilities to management and authorities.
• Serve as a key coordinator between barge lines, customers, brokers, surveyors, harbor services, and staff.
• Ensure adherence to company policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.
• Provide monthly recaps of barge and packaging operations.
• Perform other duties as required.

Requirements

• Minimum of 10 years of experience supervising dock and terminal operations.
• Thorough knowledge of dock and barge operations, safety codes, and accident prevention regulations.
• Understanding of cargo stowage and load stability.
• Valid driver’s license, current CPR certification, and a valid TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) card.

Work Environment

• Rotating shifts, including days, evenings, and nights at multiple terminals.
• Exposure to extreme outdoor temperatures (hot and cold), dusty conditions, and high noise levels.
• Potentially hazardous environment requiring awareness of fast-moving equipment.
• Approximately 10% driving required.

Pay

$110,000 – $120,000 per year. The posted range is based on the applicable geographic market and may vary depending on experience and skill set.
