Position Overview

The Biotechnology Department in the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications for part-time Instructor positions. Instructors report to the Director of the Biotechnology Department. For more information on courses offered, see Biotechnology | School of Professional Studies. Instructors are instructional members of the faculty and are not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. They teach and/or develop courses, prepare for and attend class meetings, maintain supplies, evaluate student work, and adhere to departmental policies.

Job Description

  • Teach and/or develop specified number of undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the Biotechnology program.
  • Teach common courses such as BTEC 341- Principles of Bioprocessing Laboratory I, BTEC 460- Introduction to Quality Control/Quality Assurance in Biotechnology, BTEC 542- Protein Expression in Insect Cells, and BTEC 630- Biotechnology, Regulation, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings. Make arrangements for substitutes in case of absence.
  • Identify needed reagents and equipment, ensure supplies are maintained, and communicate ordering needs to the Biotechnology Program Director.
  • Create assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide feedback, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours and be available for additional appointments if needed.
  • Adhere to Departmental, School of Professional Studies, and University policies.
  • Work with the Program Director to determine course formats and schedules, potentially cotaught with other lecturers.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Master's degree in biotechnology or a closely related field.
  • Two years professional experience in biotechnology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate level degree in engineering, engineering management, or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of prior success in teaching, preferably at the graduate level and both in-person and online (e.g., course evaluations, supervisor ratings).
  • Experience with a learning management system, classroom lecture recording system, and live inclusion of remote students.
