Position Overview

The Biotechnology Department in the School of Professional Studies at the University of Kansas Edwards Campus invites qualified scholars and professionals to submit applications for part-time Instructor positions. Instructors report to the Director of the Biotechnology Department. For more information on courses offered, see Biotechnology | School of Professional Studies. Instructors are instructional members of the faculty and are not eligible for tenure or promotion in rank. They teach and/or develop specified courses per semester, with renewal based on unit needs and performance.

Job Description

  • Teach and/or develop a specified number of undergraduate/graduate courses per semester for the Biotechnology program.
    • Common examples of courses for which Instructors would be needed (but not limited to): BTEC 341- Principles of Bioprocessing Laboratory I, BTEC 460- Introduction to Quality Control/Quality Assurance in Biotechnology, BTEC 542- Protein Expression in Insect Cells, BTEC 630- Biotechnology, Regulation, Quality Control, and Quality Assurance.
  • Prepare for and attend all class meetings.
    • In case of absence, the Instructor must make arrangements for a substitute.
  • Identify needed reagents and equipment, ensure adequate supplies levels are maintained for assigned class, and communicate ordering needs to the Biotechnology Program Director.
  • Develop assignments, administer tests, evaluate student work, provide timely feedback to students, and assign grades.
  • Hold regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
  • Be available for reasonable scheduling of appointments if a student cannot meet during scheduled office hours.
  • Adhere to all Departmental, School of Professional Studies, and University policies.
  • Instructors may work with Program Director to determine format and schedule for course(s).
  • Courses may be cotaught with other appointed Lecturers under circumstances requiring diverse expertise.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Master's degree in biotechnology or a closely related field.
  • Two years professional experience in biotechnology or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate level degree in engineering, engineering management or a closely related field.
  • Evidence of prior success in teaching, preferably at the graduate level and preferably both in-person and online (e.g. course evaluations, supervisor ratings).
  • Experience with a learning management system, a classroom lecture recording system, and live-inclusion of remote students.
