Polysomnographic Technologist - Sleep Center

About the Role

The Polysomnographic Technologist works under medical supervision to perform and evaluate overnight polysomnograms. This individual functions independently to safely operate sophisticated medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology. The technologist applies recording devices, cleans and sterilizes equipment, and monitors polysomnograms. They must recognize sleep pathology and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety.

Knowledge of normal cardiorespiratory, neurologic, and sleep physiology is essential. The technologist understands the function of equipment used to monitor and record breathing (airflow/effort), electroencephalograms (brain waves), electrocardiograms (heart rate and rhythm), electromyograms (muscle activity), and pulse oximetry (blood oxygenation/saturation). They monitor nasal continuous positive pressure, oxygen, and employ ventilatory assistance devices in accordance with established protocols. This individual is also Certified in Basic Life Support.

The technologist performs special procedures such as multiple sleep latency testing, pediatric polysomnography, ambulatory monitoring, and patient education. Record review and scoring of polysomnograms is an integral part of the job, involving the identification of normal/abnormal patterns, artifacts, and sleep/wake stages. The technologist generates a report summarizing the patient’s sleep/wake stages, respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousal analysis, and other clinical events.

Schedule

Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, 7:30 PM – 7:30 AM.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED with on-the-job training in Polysomnography of no less than one year duration, associated with a state licensed and/or nationally accredited facility.
• Successful passing of the RPSGT exam.
• Certification by the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (or registry eligible).
• Certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support.
• Demonstrates knowledge of age-related growth and development principles necessary to provide appropriate service and assure safety of patients.
