As a Polysomnographer I, you will perform a variety of sleep studies to diagnose sleep disorders and recommend interventions under the general supervision of the manager/director of Respiratory Care Services.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient medical history and document sleep issues; maintain records of patient progress.
  • Explain procedures to patients and prepare them for sleep studies.
  • Attach and calibrate equipment; ensure patient comfort before and during the study.
  • Monitor equipment effectiveness throughout the study and make necessary adjustments.
  • Educate patients on proper care of equipment and the importance of managing their sleep disorder.
  • Maintain thorough documentation before, during, and after sleep studies.
  • Verify patient history and medical orders; collect documents and obtain consent.
  • Perform age-appropriate education and select appropriate equipment for testing.
  • Conduct physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and adjust as needed.
  • Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values.
  • Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure artifact-free signals.
  • Identify, correct, and document artifacts or other issues during the study.
  • Implement interventions for patient safety and therapeutic needs (e.g., positive airway pressure, oxygen administration).
  • Follow "light on" procedures to verify data integrity and complete the data collection process.
  • Assist with scoring sleep/wake stages using professionally accepted guidelines.
  • Score clinical events according to AASM standards.
  • Generate accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data.
  • Provide age-specific care in treatment, assessment, and education of patients.
  • Prepare HSAT equipment and download data; adhere to cleaning and disinfection procedures.
  • Score HSAT recordings, identify artifacts or study failures, and generate accurate reports.

Requirements

  • 2-year/Associate Degree (preferred) or graduate of a Respiratory Care, Polysomnography, or Nursing Program (required).
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist, Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, or Registered Nurse (required).
  • Minimum 1 year of experience performing all modalities of sleep studies.
  • New graduates of Respiratory Therapy or Polysomnographic Technologist programs accepted if licensed in New York State.

Qualifications

  • NYS Respiratory Therapist, Registered Polysomnographic Technologist, or Registered Nurse license (required).
  • BLS Certification within 6 months of hire (required).
  • ALS Certification (preferred).
  • Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) or Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) certification (required).
  • Must obtain RPSGT within 3 years if holding CPSGT certification.
  • Sleep Disorders Specialty (SDS) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (alternative to RPSGT/CPSGT).

Skills

  • Reading, writing, and comprehension.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for patient interaction.

Physical Requirements

  • Light work: Exerting up to 20 lbs of force frequently; negligible force constantly to move objects.
  • Occasional: Balancing, crouching, grasping, lifting, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, walking.
  • Frequent: Typing/clerical tasks, dexterity, hearing, repetitive motion, talking, visual acuity (color, depth, perception).
  • Constant: Seeing/monitor/computer use, fit testing.

Occasional travel may be required, but not on a regular basis.

Pay

Salary range: $33.29–$49.94 per hour, based on qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and market evaluation.
