Police Transport Officer

Make an impact as a Transport Officer with the City of Salem Police Department. In this temporary/seasonal role, you will provide essential support in the safe handling, monitoring, and transport of individuals in custody, ensuring the integrity and security of detention operations.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and maintain security in detention and holding cell areas, including swing and graveyard shifts.
  • Assist officers with jail booking paperwork and custody processing.
  • Fingerprint and photograph individuals in custody as required.
  • Supervise and monitor individuals in custody, including DUII arrests and other detentions, while officers conduct investigations.
  • Transport individuals in custody between facilities or for video arraignment.
  • Operate and assist with video arraignment procedures.
  • Provide courtroom security and serve as bailiff when needed.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols during custody handling and transport.
  • Perform custody details at the hospital if a person in custody requires hospitalization.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to custody and transport activities.
  • Perform other operational or administrative duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must pass a full police background investigation and drug test (including marijuana).
  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver license and meet the City of Salem’s driving standards.
  • Must pass a criminal background check necessary to obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance and Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) certification within 30 days of hire and maintain clearance throughout employment.
  • Must be an honorably retired or retired in good standing Police Officer, Enforcement Deputy Sheriff, or State Trooper. If retired from the City of Salem, must have been retired more than 90 days by the date of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in custody handling, prisoner transport, or detention operations.
  • Familiarity with jail booking procedures and fingerprinting processes.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and law enforcement data systems.

Skills

  • Knowledge of custodial safety practices, courtroom procedures, and prisoner transport methods.
  • Ability to anticipate inappropriate behavior, take preventative action, and maintain professionalism in high-stress situations.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, schedule time effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, officials, and the public.

Physical Requirements

  • Exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Perform tasks requiring manual dexterity, repetitive motions, grasping, and feeling, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word and receive detailed information through oral communication.
  • Maintain visual acuity sufficient to observe activities, operate vehicles, and monitor safety conditions.
  • Work may be performed indoors or outdoors, sometimes in inclement weather or during dynamic transport operations.
  • Work routinely involves entering secure facilities, assisting restrained individuals, and maintaining safety and professionalism in both detention and courtroom environments.

Pay

Competitive hourly rate: $49.92/hour

Schedule

Temporary/seasonal assignment with a maximum of 1,039 hours per calendar year.
