Police Service Technician (PST)/Animal Control Officer (Part-time) (00613)

About the role

Performs responsible skilled work in the enforcement of local and State laws and ordinances regulating the keeping, control and protection of animals within the City; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the Police Sergeant or Lieutenant.

Responsibilities

• Enforcing animal control and protection ordinances; issuing citations; impounding animals
• Receiving, investigating and answering complaints concerning stray, wild or owned animals
• Patrolling, checking for animals running at large, licenses and vaccinations; setting traps for cats and dogs
• Impounding abandoned and stray dogs and other animals
• Issuing appropriate warning notices and citations
• Contacting owners of dogs or other animals having bitten someone, ordering appropriate confinement of such animals, preparing and submitting appropriate reports
• Rescuing trapped, lost or injured animals; returning animals to owners
• Assisting with euthanasia of animals
• Investigating reports of animal cruelty and issuing appropriate forms; testifying in court
• Trapping and relocating problem wildlife; advising the public on how to deal with problem wildlife
• Capturing wild, vicious, diseased and other animals using specialized equipment, techniques and chemicals
• Maintaining inventory of and ordering supplies
• Attending community meetings and making presentations in schools; assisting citizens in obtaining food and care for pets; performing related public relations duties related to animal control

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• General knowledge of the laws, ordinances, and regulations governing the control of dogs and the protection of animals
• Thorough knowledge of the care, control and handling of animals
• Thorough knowledge of the geography of the City
• Ability to recognize rabies symptoms and other animal diseases and thorough knowledge of the methods and procedures to be followed
• Ability to collect facts and prepare reports
• Ability to handle, lift and/or manage heavy and/or vicious animals
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

Requirements

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience as a veterinary assistant or animal related training
• Possession of an appropriate driver’s license valid in the State of North Carolina
• Possession of tranquilizer gun and euthanasia certifications issued by the State of North Carolina
