About the role
The Colorado Springs Police Department is accepting applications for its July 2027 Police Academy. The current Recruit hourly rate is $31.87. Upon successful completion of the Academy and obtaining POST certification, recruits will be promoted to Police Officer.
Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned sectors and respond to calls for service to keep the peace, provide assistance, resolve conflict, and maintain positive visibility.
- Enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; deter criminal activity; and make arrests when necessary.
- Work in partnership with the community to identify and resolve concerns, educate the public on laws, and communicate traffic and criminal activity information.
- Investigate and report all criminal or suspicious activity through department forms and documents.
- Render aid to injured persons.
- Patrol assigned sector in a marked police vehicle and respond to citizen calls.
- Provide assistance to community members by solving problems and resolving conflict.
- Locate and arrest suspects of crimes.
- Issue traffic and criminal summons when necessary.
- Intervene in disturbances, fights, and altercations.
- Pursue fleeing suspects on foot or in a vehicle.
- Climb, crawl, jump, and/or run to pursue suspects and protect life.
- Push, pull, lift, and/or carry persons and/or suspects who may be injured or unconscious.
- Make forceful arrests.
Minimum Qualifications
- No prior law enforcement experience or less than three years of paid experience as a law enforcement officer.
- At least 21 years of age by the date of hire (November academy start).
- High school diploma or GED.
- No felony convictions (including juvenile felony convictions).
- No convictions for misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence.
- No convictions for misdemeanor crimes that would affect ability to certify with the Colorado POST Board.
- Ability to lawfully possess a firearm.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident Status that includes eligibility to lawfully own and carry a firearm and ammunition.
- No dishonorable discharge from the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Pass the Physical Readiness Test, maintain good physical condition, and meet the medical standards established by the City of Colorado Springs Police Department.
- Valid driver’s license (must obtain a Colorado license upon hire).
- Native-level proficiency in English.
- Ability to be directly exposed to aerosol/gel irritant projectors, conducted energy devices, and riot control agents during the academy.
- Meet all Testing and Performance Standards of the CSPD Police Academy, including maintaining required academic averages and passing required academic and skills tests.
