About the role

Mercy Health seeks individuals committed to enhancing the health and well-being of all people through exceptional patient care. The Police Officer position supports the safety of BSMH facilities, including patrolling grounds, responding to emergencies, and enforcing policies.

Responsibilities

  • Protects patients, visitors, and employees by providing escorts, patrolling grounds, and mitigating safety hazards.
  • Deters criminal activity through routine patrols of all hospital property, including parking lots and decks.
  • Enforces policies such as parking regulations, visitation policies, drug enforcement, and tobacco-free/smoking policy.
  • Maintains vigilance on closed circuit television to be alerted to any escalating situations requiring protective services involvement.
  • Intervenes in patient, visitor, and/or staff confrontations as appropriate.
  • Documents all duties performed, including daily activity logs and incident reports.
  • Demonstrates understanding of emergency procedures, alarm response, evacuation, and disaster plans.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (required)
  • Associate's degree (preferred)
  • Valid driver’s license (required)
  • BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association certification (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy Certification (required within 6 months of hire)
  • 1-3 years of security, law enforcement, or military experience (preferred)

Qualifications

  • Basic Skills using Microsoft Word.
  • Proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment (e.g., batons, handcuffs, body-worn cameras, soft restraints).
  • Strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software.
  • Effective communication, active listening, empathy, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention training (required within 6 months of hire)
  • Firearms qualifications; successfully pass bi-annual firearms qualifications.

Skills & Abilities

  • Hard/Tech/Clinical Skills: Basic Skills using Microsoft Word. Proficiency in the use, maintenance, and safety protocols for defensive tools and restraint equipment. Strong technical skills in radio communication, report writing, surveillance systems, and access control software.
  • Soft/Interpersonal Skills: Effective communication, active listening, empathy, and conflict resolution.
