Police Officer / Police Officer Trainee

About the Role

Tulane University Police Department is recruiting for Police Officer (full-time and part-time) and Police Officer Trainee positions. Candidates with current Louisiana POST Level 1 certification will be considered for Police Officer roles, while non-POST candidates will be considered for Police Officer Trainee positions. Trainees will attend a police academy to earn POST Level 1 certification.

Police Officers perform law enforcement, crime prevention, and general police/security services, enforcing state, local, and university policies. Officers conduct proactive patrols via foot, bicycle, or motorized vehicle. Police Officer Trainees perform basic security functions, including patrol and public safety services, and will attend a police academy to earn Louisiana POST Level 1 certification.

Responsibilities

• Attend and successfully complete, annually, a department-authorized and POST-approved in-service training course (minimum 40 hours of instruction).
• Obtain and maintain a special police commission from the Louisiana State Police Department.
• Successfully complete the department’s field-training program within the designated time frame.
• Perform law enforcement and crime prevention duties, including proactive patrol and enforcement of laws and university policies.
• Provide public safety services to the university community.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 21 years of age or older.
• Police Officer: Louisiana POST Level 1 certification upon hire; certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
• Police Officer Trainee: Must complete all training requirements, including graduating from an accredited police academy and obtaining POST certification within 365 days of hire; certification must be maintained as a condition of employment.
• Obtain Red Cross First Aid and CPR certification within 365 days of hire and maintain it as a condition of employment.
• Valid and unrestricted U.S. driver’s license (corrective lenses permitted) and must meet Tulane University Motor Vehicle Policy criteria to become an authorized driver.
• No prior criminal convictions that would prohibit meeting Louisiana state standards for law enforcement officers.
• Pass a medical examination, including vision screening and drug testing; must obtain immunizations and medical tests as required for patient care and high-risk areas.
• Pass a psychological evaluation.
• Demonstrate good moral character and a clean driving record.
• Meet departmental standards for appearance and grooming.

Working Environment

• Required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be able to work in inclement weather or extreme conditions.
• May be confined to a patrol car for an entire shift.
• Potential exposure to hazardous materials, infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, steam, car battery acid, loud noises, smoke, and fire.
• Must be knowledgeable and able to correctly use a TB mask and other precautionary equipment.
