Responsibilities

• Implement community policing concepts through quantifiable and measurable activities to create police/community partnerships, building confidence and credibility with the campus community.
• Patrol the campus by vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot for criminal activity, traffic and parking violations, safety hazards, and citizens in need of assistance; conduct crime suppression activities.
• Respond to and provide medical assistance using equipment such as First Aid kits, AEDs, etc., to injured and ill people on campus and at traffic accidents near or on campus.
• Promote programs and services by participating at fairs and orientations, conducting risk reduction presentations to students, faculty, staff, parents, and the greater community.
• Serve as the first responder to reports of crimes in progress.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must meet the current employment standards of the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and CSUN Minimum Standards of Employment and Training.
• Must be free of any felony convictions, have good moral character, be a high school graduate or equivalent, and meet pre-employment requirements including a physical exam with drug testing, psychological exam, and pass a comprehensive POST background investigation.
• Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California.
• Successful completion of the California POST Basic Course and possession of a California POST Basic Certificate are required.
• Possess a valid California driver’s license.

Skills

• Demonstrated knowledge of community-policing principles and ability to build trust through proactive partnerships and problem-solving.
• Skilled in evaluating potential criminal activity, identifying risk factors, and recommending effective prevention strategies.
• Able to conduct field interviews, assess crowd dynamics, and recognize conditions that may escalate into safety concerns.
• Strong ability to respond promptly to medical emergencies and hazardous conditions, applying proficiency in First Aid and CPR, and coordinating effectively with medical personnel.
• Skilled in identifying environmental hazards such as chemical spills or unsafe conditions and initiating corrective actions; proficient in patrol operations across various modes of transportation.
• Knowledge of campus safety best practices, including identifying safety hazards, security deficiencies, and unauthorized activity during building and grounds patrols.
• Ability to remain informed about crime trends and implement prevention strategies; skilled in delivering safety education and promoting departmental programs.
• Ability to conduct thorough investigations by assessing active crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, victims, and suspects, and determining appropriate enforcement actions.
• Skilled in preparing clear and accurate documentation, including reports, citations, and arrest paperwork.
• Competent in evidence handling, crime scene preservation, and safely transporting arrestees, juveniles, or individuals experiencing mental-health crises while adhering to legal and procedural requirements.

Pay

The anticipated hiring range is $8,069 - $9,468 per month, dependent upon qualifications and experience. The salary range for this classification is $6,418 - $9,468 per month.

Schedule

• Full-time; 40 hours per week.
• Rotating shifts that include nights, weekends, holidays, and special events.

This is a regular position with a one-year probationary period. The role requires physical on-campus work in Northridge and is not eligible for telecommuting.
