About the role
The Martinez Police Department is dedicated to providing high-quality policing services to the community. It consists of 53 FTE’s, including 37 sworn officers and 16 professional staff, with an annual operating budget of $16.6 million. The department offers a comprehensive range of services, including investigations, traffic enforcement, tactical units, K-9 units, homeless outreach, crisis intervention, and community engagement.
Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned areas by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot to maintain law and order, detect crimes, and enforce laws and ordinances.
- Responds to calls for protection of life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, and providing public service.
- Conducts initial and follow-up investigations at incident scenes, collects evidence, and interrogates suspects.
- Apprehends and arrests offenders, controls and mitigates potentially hostile situations, and directs traffic.
- Serves as a liaison and public relations officer, developing relationships with the community and other agencies.
- Performs administrative duties, such as inspecting establishments, administering first aid, and preparing reports.
- Trains and assists less experienced personnel, and serves as acting watch commander as needed.
- Operates a motorcycle in traffic enforcement.
Requirements
To qualify, candidates must meet the minimum qualifications, which include a high school diploma, passing the GED test or equivalent, and completing a POST-approved police academy or obtaining a POST Basic Course Waiver. Additional desirable qualifications include an associate's degree in criminal justice or a related field.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Pass a medical examination, drug screen, polygraph, psychological, and background investigation.
