About the role

The Juneau Police Department seeks experienced Police Officers to join our team in Alaska’s capital city. Ideal candidates are energetic, compassionate, and committed to helping the community.

Responsibilities

• Conduct patrols on foot, bicycle, or in a police car to observe activities on city streets, businesses, residential areas, and public spaces.
• Use discretion to take enforcement actions or initiate peacekeeping measures.
• Operate police cars or other vehicles, investigate accidents, determine violations, issue citations, and take necessary action to enforce laws.
• Take charge of situations requiring law enforcement involvement, such as car accidents, emergencies, and public disturbances.
• Assess situations and determine immediate responses to ensure safety.
• Administer first aid, direct traffic, request emergency assistance, and transport prisoners.
• Take charge of investigations, collect and preserve evidence, prepare complaints, serve process papers, and testify in court.
• Use specialized police equipment and perform arrests and apprehensions.
• Respond to calls for service or self-initiate investigations, evaluate situations, and take appropriate action.
• Question witnesses, collect statements, and refer victims to appropriate agencies.
• Use specialized police equipment and perform arrests and apprehensions.
• Prepare reports of investigations and conditions deemed dangerous or unusual.
• Assist other law enforcement agencies and perform special police/community relations, investigation unit, or metro unit assignments.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Must be a citizen of the United States or U.S. National.
• Not less than 21 years of age at time of appointment.
• Must possess or obtain a valid Alaska Driver's License by date of appointment.
• Must be in "Good Standing" to be employed or re-employed to a full-service Police Department.
• Currently employed Police Officers must be able to discharge all duties without administrative, mental, or disciplinary hindrance.
• Retired or former Police Officers must have been authorized by law to engage in or supervise the prevention, detection, investigation, or prosecution of, or the incarceration of any person for any violation of law, and had statutory powers of arrest.
• Military Police, Detention/Correction Officer, Reserve Officer, Park Ranger/Park Police, Capital Police, Detention/Jail/Court Security Sheriff’s Deputy or Marshall, Special District Police, Railroad Police, Village Public Safety Officer, and federal law enforcement personnel will NOT be considered as previous related experience.

Qualifications

• Education: High school graduation or possession of a GED certificate.
• Cumulative related service in Alaska must include a minimum of one year of uniform patrol duty as a commissioned law enforcement officer (DPS Academy Certified).
• Validated evidence of successful completion of a related training academy certified by the appropriate state, federal or local regulatory or oversight agency.
• Service within any police/law enforcement department/agency in the State of Alaska.
• Service in a city of at least 5,000 population as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, or service in a city that is part of a Metropolitan Area with at least 25,000 population as defined by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget.
• Cumulative related service must include a minimum of one year of uniformed patrol duty as a commissioned law enforcement officer AND validated evidence of successful completion of a related training academy certified by the appropriate state, federal or local regulatory or oversight agency.

Pay

$42.04 - $56.44 per hour, depending on experience.

Schedule

Officers work 12-hour shifts and rotate between days and nights on a quarterly basis.

Special Notes

• Attention Veterans: The Juneau Police Department is an approved employer for the VA’s On-the-Job training program.
• Sign-on bonus of $30,000 available for eligible applicants; inquire with the hiring manager.
• Applicants must complete a background investigation, polygraph examination, medical examination, and controlled substances screening before being offered a position.
• Appointment to Police Officer positions will be conditional pending successful completion of all portions of the background process, the medical evaluation, psychological evaluation, and receipt of verified negative results of pre-employment testing for controlled substances.
