Police Officer (Lateral Level)

About the role

The Police Department seeks candidates who can respond to calls, complaints, or reports of criminal activity, maintain public peace, protect life and property, prevent crime, and enforce laws and ordinances.

Responsibilities

• Responds to calls, complaints, or reports of criminal activity and takes appropriate action.
• Maintains public peace and order, protects life and property, and prevents crime.
• Engages in self-defense or use of force as appropriate.
• Executes felony motor vehicle stops and investigates vehicle collisions.
• Administers immediate assistance in critical and emergency situations.
• Secures and controls crime scenes, collects and secures evidence, and prepares reports.
• Performs community public relations duties as appropriate.
• Assists with special assignments and community service duties.
• Completes reports and forms accurately and in a timely manner.

Requirements

• Successfully complete the written, oral examination, and job-related physical agility tests prescribed by the City Civil Service Commission.
• Consent to background and driving record investigations prior to employment.
• Pass psychological and polygraph examinations, and a medical examination.
• Have an Associate Degree or equivalent technical certification from an accredited college.
• Complete the Basic Law Enforcement School and field training course.
• Acquire and maintain CPR and basic first aid certification.
• Obtain and maintain certification as an operator of radar and BAC Verifier.
• Have a valid Washington State driver's license.

Qualifications

• Minimum 12 months’ full-time experience following completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Academy (BLEA).
• Associate degree or equivalent technical certification from an accredited college or university.
• Current Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy graduate or eligible to attend the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Equivalency Academy.
• Ability to learn and maintain thorough skill in the use and care of firearms.
• Ability to express self clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
• Keyboard accuracy and proficiency in using Microsoft products and department records management system.
• Excellent judgment and ability to maintain objectivity in investigations.
• Ability to maintain a balanced perspective and adhere to strict policies and procedures.
• Ability to work as a reliable team member and establish effective working relationships.
• Ability to adjust to a schedule and lifestyle that requires working rotating shifts and holidays.
• Ability to maintain a balanced perspective about people despite continuous exposure to lawbreakers.
• Physical stamina, agility, and strength to perform physical activities such as climbing, walking, running, lifting, and holding.
• Ability to use all senses to assess situations for significant elements or potential dangers.

Skills

Must have the ability to read, interpret, and properly apply legal materials applicable to law enforcement work. Must express self clearly and concisely both orally and in writing. Must be able to memorize and recall detail, such as names, faces, addresses, incidents, and identification of objects. Must be able to handle high levels of personal stress and maintain composure and control of self and the situation.
