About the role

The Highland Park Police Department seeks experienced officers to join a progressive and community-focused agency. The department values proactive policing, officer development, collaboration, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Criminal Investigation & Apprehension: Handle complaints, investigate violations, document details, conduct interviews, interrogations, and prepare reports.
  • Crime Prevention: Patrol assigned areas, monitor for criminal activity, conduct security inspections, and educate the public on crime prevention.
  • Traffic Enforcement: Engage in traffic and parking enforcement, investigate accidents, and participate in efforts to reduce traffic accidents.
  • Order Maintenance: Respond to domestic disputes, assist with public hazards, administer first aid, and investigate lost and found property.
  • Community Policing: Develop familiarity with community issues, engage with community members, and support the Department’s mission and values.
  • Peripheral Duties: Attend training, maintain skills, licenses, and certifications, train personnel, conduct background investigations, and perform desk duties.

Requirements

Age: At least 21 years old and less than 65 years old. Applicants with 60 semester credit hours or more from an accredited institution may be considered for an entry-level position.

Education: Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent and completed 60 semester hours or more from an accredited college or university. Four years of continuous active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces may qualify applicants for an entry-level position.

Certification or License: Must be a U.S. citizen and certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB).

Skills

Strong customer service, multitasking, and confidentiality skills. Knowledge of federal, state, and local criminal laws and FOIA regulations. Ability to follow instructions and maintain effective working relationships. Familiarity with the City’s geography, major roads, and landmarks. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including spelling and grammar.

Pay

Salary schedule based on years of service:

  • Step 1: $91,158.16 (less than 12 months)
  • Step 2: $94,348.61 (12-23 full months)
  • Step 3: $98,885.44 (24-35 full months)
  • Step 4: $103,648.09 (36-47 full months)
  • Step 5: $108,746.43 (48-59 full months)
  • Step 6: $114,184.15 (60 full months or more)
  • Step 7: $119,893.59
  • Step 8: $125,888.72
Longevity pay of an additional 2.5% to 9% of salary based on total years of service.

Schedule

Regular and irregular shift work, including weekend and holiday coverage. Standard shifts are eight hours but may be extended due to emergencies, disasters, manpower shortages, or ongoing incidents.
