Join the Tolleson Police Department as a Police Officer - Lateral and play a vital role in ensuring the safety and security of citizens, municipal streets, buildings, residences, and neighborhoods.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to criminal and public calls for service, including fires, automobile accidents, crimes, neighborhood disturbances, and other citizen requests.
  • Handle crimes in progress, conduct investigations, welfare checks, and resolve civil disputes.
  • Provide riot control, assist the homeless population, remove roadway debris, and aid disabled vehicles.
  • Patrol assigned areas by automobile, bicycle, motorcycle, or foot to prevent and enforce crime and traffic laws.
  • Observe and evaluate situations, make arrests, issue citations, and write detailed reports, supplements, booking paperwork, field information cards, and search warrants.
  • Perform activities related to criminal investigations, such as securing crime scenes, administering first aid, gathering evidence, obtaining witness statements, apprehending suspects, and testifying in court.
  • Maintain readiness for emergency response, perform routine equipment maintenance, and educate staff and the public on crime safety and prevention.
  • Support City functions, including court security, traffic control, and community events.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum age of 21 years.
  • Valid Arizona Class D Driver’s License with no felony convictions.
  • Arizona POST certification in good standing or eligibility to take the AZ POST waiver exam.
  • Above-average physical conditioning, including running, climbing, and crawling, with the ability to pass and maintain entry-level officer physical fitness requirements.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, along with acceptable computer skills.

Knowledge

  • Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Proper police procedures in a modern law enforcement agency.
  • Legal practices, procedures, and terminology related to the Police Department and personnel management.
  • Interview and interrogation techniques.
  • Tactical operations and principles of safe motor vehicle operation in normal and emergency situations.
  • Geography of the city and surrounding service areas, including community organizations and facility locations.
  • Dispatch radio operations, crime scene processing, and basic first aid principles.

Skills

  • Resolving problems and making sound decisions.
  • Maintaining confidentiality and security of protected information.
  • Testifying in court and de-escalating high-intensity situations.
  • Conducting investigations and handling firearms and non-lethal weapons (e.g., Tasers).

  • Enforcing traffic regulations and navigating city streets.
  • Investigating criminal, non-criminal, collision, and security incidents.
  • Conducting safe pat-downs and searches for weapons or contraband.
  • Utilizing computers and relevant software applications.

Physical Demands

  • Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly.
  • Exposure to atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, gases), hazardous materials (chemicals, oils, blood, bodily fluids), extreme temperatures, and environmental hazards (disruptive individuals, imminent danger).
  • Travel across rough, uneven, and rocky surfaces.

Qualifications

The City of Tolleson is offering a $8,000 hiring bonus to qualified lateral sworn police officers. Fifty percent (50%) of the bonus will be paid upon hire, with the remaining fifty percent (50%) awarded after successful completion of the City's introductory probationary period. Candidates must commit to a minimum of three (3) years of service.

A thorough background investigation will include a polygraph, psychological examination, AZPOST medical examination, and drug screening.

Pay

Full salary range: $35.36 - $51.27 hourly, based on full-time length of service.
