Summary Description

The City of Hemet is accepting continuous applications for Police Officer-Lateral - HIRING BONUS ELIGIBLE. Hiring Bonus Eligibility Requirements: An applicant must be employed as a California full-time police officer with at least three (3) consecutive years of street/patrol specific experience at the time that the applicant submitted a job application to the City for the Lateral Police Officer position. Three (3) years of experience as a full-time police officer must have occurred at a California POST-certified Police or Sheriff's Department.

  • The following types of experience do not count toward the prerequisite:
    • Street/Patrol experience from an agency outside of California.
    • Prior experience as a military police officer.
    • Prior experience as a correctional officer.
    • Prior experience as a sheriff's deputy working at a county jail or state prison.

Special Requirements:

  • Applicants must: (1) Possess a valid Class C California Driver License; and (2) Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, fingerprinting, and a medical examination which will include a pre-employment drug screening.

Benefits Summary

  • Retirement: The City contracts with the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS).
  • Medical Coverage: The City contributes 100% of the premium for employee only coverage on the City's Kaiser plans.
  • Dental & Vision Coverage: The City pays 100% of the premium for dental & vision coverage for employees and their dependents.
  • Life & Long-Term Disability Insurance: The City pays 100% of the premium for a term-life insurance policy of $50,000. The City pays 100% of the premium for long-term disability insurance.
  • Educational Reimbursement: The City will provide up to $2,500 per calendar year, subject to terms set forth in the Hemet Police Officers Association MOU.
  • Leave Accruals: Employees earn up to the following amounts of leave: 96 vacation hours per year within the first three years of service, 8 hours per month Sick Leave, 13 paid holidays per year.
  • Bilingual Pay: The City will provide $255.00 per month for eligible assignments based on the City’s needs for bilingual skill and successful completion of a test.
  • K-9 Officer Pay: Assigned officers will receive seven (7) hours of overtime pay per pay period. Patrol/SRO: assigned officers will receive an additional 2% base salary increase. Field Training Officers: assigned officers will receive an additional 10% base salary increase. Mandatory Stand-by/On-call: assigned officers will receive $250 per pay period.
  • Uniform Allowance: The City will provide a uniform allowance in the amount of $1,345 per year.
  • Education Incentive Pay: The City will provide 3% above base pay for officers presently holding a POST Intermediate Certificate or a Bachelor's degree. The City will provide an additional 5% above base pay for officers presently holding a POST Advanced Certification or a Master's degree. Maximum 8% combined incentive.

  • Do you possess, or have the ability to obtain, prior to appointment, a Class C valid Driver's License?
  • Are you currently employed as a sworn California Peace Officer?
  • Do you have three (3) consecutive years of street/patrol specific experience as a full-time sworn California Peace Officer?
  • How many years do you have as a Police Officer with a California law enforcement agency?
  • Are you currently serving probation for any crime (misdemeanor or felony)?
  • Have you ever been CONVICTED of a felony?
  • Have you ever been CONVICTED of Domestic Violence?
  • Do you have any Active Restraining Order?
  • Have you ever used illegal drugs in the past five (5) years?
  • Have you used any hallucinogens (mushrooms, LSD, peyote, mescaline, etc.) in the past fifteen (15) years?
