Police Officer I
About the role
The Police Officer I position is a sworn law enforcement position under the limited direction of the Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant or Chief of Police. Officers must be capable of providing a full range of law enforcement services.
Responsibilities
- Performs preliminary and follow-up investigations to solve crimes, identify suspects and victims, apprehend criminals, and document case information
- Engages in problem solving, threat mitigation, and conflict resolution for a wide range of issues and incidents involving citizens, groups, campus entities, government agencies, businesses, leaders, and others
- Provides personal safety and crime prevention education to institutional community
- Protects life, property, and the preservation of peace and good order and provides emergency aid to the institutional community
- Ensures the safe and orderly flow of traffic on institutional roadways and enforces traffic laws
Requirements
- At least 21 years of age by hire date
- Must possess or be eligible to possess a Wisconsin Driver’s License
- Minimum of 60 college credits earned/completed within 5 years from date of hire
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Attention to detail
- Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability
- Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and special events
Qualifications
- 12 month probationary period required
- Preferred qualifications include degree in criminal justice or related field, prior law enforcement experience, specialized training in campus/community policing, crisis intervention, or threat assessment, experience working with diverse populations, and understanding of Clery Act, Title IX, FERPA, and other laws/regulations that impact campus safety
Skills
Ability to use emergency equipment, arrest and restrain subjects as necessary, including the use of handcuffs and approved force options, and employ defensive tactics when faced with resistance or threats to personal safety. Lifting, carrying, and dragging heavy objects. Sitting and standing for long periods of time. Providing emergency medical aid and assisting in the evacuation of injured or endangered individuals. Performing patrol duties, including rotating shifts, foot patrols, and security checks of facilities.
Benefits
Compensation: $29 per hour (certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases). or $22.00 per hour (non-certifiable - may be eligible for future step increases).

University Police are available 24/7/365 to help students, faculty, staff and guests in need of assistance through active patrols of campus or dispatched response protocols.
