About the role

This is general police work in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Police Officers perform work in accordance with the departmental rules and regulations and receive assignments and instructions from police personnel of higher rank.

Requirements

  • To apply, applicants must meet the following requirements:
  • U.S. Citizen: Must be a U.S. citizen and at least 21 years old at the time of application.
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License: Must have a good driving record.
  • No license suspensions in the last 2 years.
  • No more than 2 suspensions in the last 5 years (unless due to error).
  • No Felony Convictions: Must never have been convicted of a felony or any crime that would question your moral character.
  • Certification and Written Test: If certified by the FDLE, applicants must provide their FDLE certification and pass the Basic Motor Skills and Swim Test (if not previously submitted).
  • If not currently certified as a police officer by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), applicants must possess certification from another federal or state law enforcement agency and submit the academy curriculum.
  • Pass the following tests administered by the Broward College Criminal Justice Institute (unless exempt due to qualifications): Basic Motor Skills Test (must be completed within 6 months before application), Swim Test (no time limit), Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (must pass within 4 years).

Pay

  • Check issued bi-weekly on every other Friday; Direct Deposit is mandatory for all new employees with a Credit Union or Banking Institution.
  • Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment: One times Annual Earnings, rounded to the next higher $1,000. (Policy paid for by the City).
  • Hospitalization, Major Medical, Dental and Vision: The Employee pays a portion of the cost for themselves and for dependent coverage at a rate established by Administration. Dependent Coverage: spouses are eligible only if they do not have entitlement to participate in another employer's group medical plan or Medicare.
  • Police Officer's Accidental Death and Dismemberment: $167,505 death and dismemberment policy for Police Officers. (Policy paid for by the City).
  • Long Term Disability: Available for the first five (5) years of employment: 60% of monthly salary/$5,000 max.
  • Retirement: While in an uncertified Police Officer status, mandatory contribution of 4 % of salary to the General Employee's Pension Plan. Upon achieving a certified Police Officer status, mandatory contribution of 8% of pensionable wages with up to 50 hours of overtime, shift differential and assignment pay. Completion of 25 years of credited service regardless of age.

  • Work Environment: This job posting has been designated as "ESSENTIAL" for declared emergencies and must meet National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level.
