About the role
The City of Roanoke is seeking Certified Police Officers to serve the community through law enforcement. This position is for those with previous police officer experience. Depending upon experience, Certified Police Officers are eligible for a bonus up to $7,000. Certified in-state officers have to be verified that they are in good standing through DCJS after they complete all the other background requirements for an Entry-Level officer. Out of state certified officers have to do this as well but there is a possibility that they may have to attend more training as their initial training may not meet DCJS standards since Basic Academy training is not standardized across the nation.
Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned beat on foot, motorcycle, bicycle, or in patrol car
- Controls traffic, prevents crime or disturbance of peace, and arrests violators
- May perform assigned work in either a uniformed or non-uniformed capacity
- Responds to communication dispatches to answer calls and complaints
- Aids persons in distress, including mentally ill, violent, criminally motivated, and often impaired or socially challenged
- Makes arrests following service of warrants, personal observation of offenses, and individual investigation with a working knowledge of searchable and seizure; criminal traffic and civil law
- Participates in criminal investigations, community problem solving that includes recognized community policing tenants
- Testsifies in court, often on days off as directed by subpoena
- Directs traffic as required and reports unsafe conditions in streets or other public facilities
- Recovers stolen and lost property
- Assigned to shift work duty that includes both day and night shift; works frequently weekends and holidays
Qualifications
- Must be legally compliant to possess and certify with an issued handgun according to Virginia law
- Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school with a major in social or police science desirable but not required; or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Successful completion of basic law enforcement academy and the probationary period as police officer
Benefits
- Paid leave accrues as follows: Fire 24-hr shift employees 0 - 4 12 hours/month, 19.75 hours/month for 5-9 years, etc.
- Extended Illness Leave accrues at the rate of six (6) hours per month
- Mental Health & Well-Being Leave is 24 hours upon hire, with 8 hours per fiscal year and up to 40 hours per fiscal year
- Retirement: Employees contribute 5% of salary and choose between participating in a traditional defined benefit plan or a hybrid program
- Defined Benefit Pension Plan: Normal retirement after 55th birthday, and when combination of age and creditable service equals 85; or, 65th birthday if completed at least five years of creditable service. For sworn officers in Police and Fire/EMS, normal retirement after 50th birthday, and when combination of age and service equals 75; or, 65th birthday or older with 5 years of creditable service.
- Deferred Compensation: Employees may voluntarily contribute salary deferred dollars into a City Sponsored 457 Plan
