About the role
The Martinez Police Department is dedicated to providing high-quality policing services to the community. It employs 53 full-time equivalent (FTE) officers, including 37 sworn officers and 16 professional staff, with an annual operating budget of $16.6 million. The department offers a comprehensive range of services, including investigations, traffic enforcement, tactical units, K-9 units, homeless outreach, crisis intervention, and community engagement.
Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned areas by car, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot to maintain law and order and prevent crime.
- Responds to calls for protection of life and property, enforcing laws and ordinances, and providing general public service.
- Conducts initial and follow-up investigations at crime scenes, collects evidence, and interviews victims and witnesses.
- Apprehends and arrests offenders, and controls and mitigates potentially hostile situations.
- Serves as a liaison between the police department and the community, developing reliable informants and providing intelligence.
- Cooperates with other law enforcement agencies and responds to mutual aid requests.
- Performs administrative and other duties in support of law enforcement services.
- Attends meetings, maintains equipment, and administers CPR and first aid.
- Testifies in various legal proceedings and prepares reports.
- Trains and assists less experienced personnel as needed.
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or equivalent, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge and abilities.
- Graduation from a California POST-approved police academy or possession of a POST Basic Course Waiver.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Pass a medical examination, drug screen, polygraph, psychological evaluation, and background check.
- Free of any felony convictions.
