About the role

The Norfolk Police Department (NPD) seeks qualified individuals to join its team of dedicated officers, jailors, and deputies. Established in 1797, NPD is committed to protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Norfolk.

Responsibilities

• Enforce state and local laws.
• Perform patrol duties and respond to calls for service.
• Investigate crimes, serve warrants, and make arrests.
• Provide assistance and information to the public.
• Maintain administrative requirements and provide public information.

Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License (prior to employment start date).
• U.S. Citizen (born or naturalized).
• Successfully pass all entry level testing and assessments.

Qualifications

• Virginia Certified Police Officers: Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy, DCJS certification, and one year of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer.
• Certified Police Officers outside Virginia, within the United States: Graduation from a DCJS approved Basic Law Enforcement Police Academy, DCJS certification, and three years of consecutive active service as a certified patrol officer.
• Virginia In-State Jailor/Sheriff Deputy: Graduation from a DCJS approved basic Jailor Academy, Jailor certification, and one year of consecutive active service as a Jailor/Deputy Sheriff in Virginia.

Pay

This position is eligible for a one-time $5,000 signing bonus upon completion of the probationary period.

Schedule

Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation, and sick leave. Temporary/seasonal and part-time employees are generally only eligible for employer-provided parking and access to membership in a credit union.

Special project/grant employees are generally eligible for the same benefits of regular full-time employees; however, retirement, life insurance, and participation in health plans vary depending upon funding and authorization.
