Duties Summary

Receives, stores, and issues police evidence and found property; performs a variety of clerical tasks; and performs other related duties as required.

Examples of Duties

  • Receives evidence from the Field Operations Bureau and the Investigative Bureau.
    • Tags and accounts for all evidence.
    • Checks evidence for proper markings and identification.
    • Cleans and organizes evidence storage areas.
    • Conducts inventory of all evidence stored.
    • Prepares monthly statistics on disposition of evidence.
    • Prepares monthly statistics on evidence received.
    • Maintains evidence log; maintains found property log.
  • Answers inquiries on evidence reporting procedures.
    • Answers questions from investigators, witnesses, and the public about evidence handling and disposal.
    • Provides information on evidence storage and retrieval procedures.
    • Ensures compliance with legal and departmental policies regarding evidence handling.
  • Maintains evidence log; maintains found property log.
    • Records details of all evidence and found property received, stored, and disposed of.
    • Updates log entries regularly to reflect current status of evidence and found property.
    • Ensures accurate and complete documentation of all evidence transactions.
  • Releases evidence to investigating officers for court presentation.
    • Verifies that evidence meets legal standards for court presentation.
    • Prepares evidence for court presentation, including packaging and labeling.
    • Coordinates with court staff to ensure timely delivery of evidence.
  • Stores confiscated weapons and assists in the disposition of same.
    • Assists in the safekeeping of confiscated weapons.
    • Collaborates with firearms experts to properly dispose of weapons.
    • Ensures compliance with state and federal laws regarding weapon disposal.
  • Acts as liaison between federal and military agencies regarding evidence of pertinence to them.
    • Communicates with federal and military agencies regarding evidence of interest.
    • Shares relevant information and updates on evidence handling and disposition.
    • Facilitates cooperation between agencies on evidence-related matters.
  • Testifies in court on the transaction of evidence.
    • Attends court proceedings to testify about evidence handling and disposition.

    • Ensures accuracy and completeness of evidence-related testimony.
  • Supervises assigned police cadets in the evidence room.
    • Trains cadets in evidence handling and storage procedures.
    • Evaluates cadets' performance and provides feedback.
    • Mentors cadets to develop skills in evidence management.
  • Witnesses the destruction of drugs and other vice paraphernalia together with vice personnel.
    • Participates in the destruction of illegal substances and paraphernalia.
    • Ensures compliance with legal and departmental policies regarding drug destruction.
    • Collaborates with vice personnel to ensure thorough and safe destruction processes.
  • Accounts for and disposes of property received in coroner's inventory cases.
    • Verifies the accuracy of property listings in coroner's inventory cases.
    • Disposes of property in accordance with legal and departmental guidelines.
    • Ensures proper documentation of property disposal.
  • Receives property from the country districts on closed/suspended cases.
    • Processes property received from country districts.
    • Transfers property to appropriate storage locations.
    • Ensures accurate and complete documentation of property receipt.
  • Transfers money to Finance Director upon forfeiture or conviction.
    • Monitors forfeiture and conviction cases.
    • Transfers funds to Finance Director for processing.
    • Ensures accurate and timely transfer of funds.
  • Records and stores property turned over to the department for safekeeping.
    • Documents property received for safekeeping.
    • Stores property securely in designated areas.
    • Ensures proper documentation of property storage.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:

  • A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school, and two (2) years of storekeeping experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, or two (2) years of law enforcement experience that included the handling of evidence and/or property, and some typing experience.
  • Must be qualified to carry and/or possess firearm or ammunition in accordance with state and federal laws, e.g., no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.
  • Must possess a valid State of Hawai‘i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable motor vehicle operator's license at time of filing.
Physical Requirements:
