About the role

The Police Detention Officer performs duties associated with: the operation of a jail, the booking and processing of arrested persons, and the welfare and security of prisoners.

Responsibilities

  • Processes prisoners into the City's police detention facility;
  • Screens person, property and facility for contraband;
  • Captures quality mug shots and fingerprints;
  • Sets up and maintains inventory of prisoner's personal property;
  • Monitors and logs security checks of prisoners being detained in cells;
  • Restrains combative, suicidal, argumentative, or mentally disturbed prisoners;
  • Completes detailed records and logs and completes forms;
  • Transports prisoners to and from court, county jail and other valley agencies;
  • Maintains jail facilities and equipment and conducts routine prisoner cell inspections;
  • Transports prisoners to and from court, county jail and other valley agencies.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) equivalent;
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of application;
  • A valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date;
  • Ability to obtain and maintain firearm certification;
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within a year of date of hire.

Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date;
  • Graduated Driver's Licenses are considered restricted;
  • Obtain and maintain firearm certification;
  • Possess certification from a Detention/Correction/Police Officer academy or ability to obtain certification;
  • Possess and maintain a Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification within a year of date of hire.

Skills

  • Physical agility to restrain and control offenders within the confines of a jail setting or at mobile sites;
  • Quick reaction to physical confrontations and emergency situations;
  • Perform defensive tactics, which require quick reflexes, agility, coordination, and strength;
  • Learn and perform first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedures;
  • Multiple physical tasks simultaneously;
  • Continuous and repetitive arm, hand, and eye movement;
  • Visual and muscular dexterity to operate: a motor vehicle, computer equipment, and two-way radio;
  • Maintain constant vigilance to the surrounding area;
  • First aid;
  • Use appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when needed/required;
  • Safely operate a motor vehicle;
  • Travel to/from various locations;
  • Work a variety of scheduled shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays.

Pay

The anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $34.22/hour or $71,177.60 annually.

Schedule

The Police Detention Officer job requires working different shifts to include: rotating, evenings, weekends, and holidays. You will be required to work mandatory overtime and periodic changing shift assignments with minimal notice.
