About the Role
This non-sworn civilian position supports law enforcement by performing public relations, technical, clerical, and field duties to assist the public, officers, and other personnel.
Responsibilities
- Respond to low-risk calls for service in the field using a city-owned vehicle.
- Write police reports from citizen interactions in the field, by phone, or at the police department.
- Direct traffic and collect evidence.
- Investigate private property accidents.
- Refer citizens to city services.
- Maintain visibility by patrolling assigned areas, including streets, parks, neighborhoods, and businesses.
- Assist officers in documenting case information.
- Respond to questions, complaints, and information requests from the public, merchants, civic organizations, and employees.
- Take and relay messages, direct calls, and return calls as needed.
- Assist in critical incidents, special events, and storm-related emergencies.
- Use the agency’s electronic reporting system and comply with GEARS (Georgia Electronic Accident Reporting System).
- Attend court proceedings.
- Assist Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services at fires or accidents in the assigned area.
- Monitor restricted parking areas and issue citations for violations.
- Operate a two-way radio to dispatch patrol cars.
- Accept and properly submit citizen complaints and commendations to professional standards.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Driver’s License.
- Typing skills and ability to use standard office equipment.
- Effective public interaction and strong communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Quick and calm response in emergency situations.
- Maintain security and confidentiality of all information.
- Assist the public in obtaining reports and information.
- Willingness to undergo fingerprinting and background checks (local, state, and national).
- Willingness to submit to a voice stress analysis and psychological evaluation.
- Maintain conduct that does not discredit the officer, department, or city, both on and off duty.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Work in all outdoor elements, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and wind.
- Potential exposure to drugs, fumes, blood-borne pathogens, and hazardous conditions.
- Mobility to work in office and field settings using standard office equipment.
- Vision to read printed materials and computer screens; hearing and speech for in-person and telephone communication.
