Basic Responsibilities

  • Assist citizens at the Command Desk by answering phones and taking reports both in person and over the phone.
  • Prisoner care.
  • Prisoner processing.
  • Maintain department equipment.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and operational capabilities of the police facility and grounds.
  • Lift, and move objects up to 50 lbs.
  • Participate in self-defense training.
  • Willing to perform all other tasks as assigned.

Criminal Justice Course Work

Prior work experience: None required. Preference may be given to those applicants who have law enforcement experience and/or backgrounds in law enforcement or a criminal justice environment.

Pre-employment Standards

  • Not less than 18 years of age.
  • Citizen of the United States.
  • Possess a high school diploma.
  • Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
  • Have no more than two hazardous traffic violations in the preceding five years, or a total of no more than four points on or after the date of application.
  • Have no prior felony convictions.
  • Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five years of the date of application.
  • All misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility of the applicant.
  • Pass a psychological examination administered at the direction of the department.
  • Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination, conducted by a licensed health care professional of the department’s choosing.
  • Pass a drug test, checking for the presence of illicit controlled substances.
  • Pass the department’s Oral Review Board.
  • Possess good moral character, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Possess a background investigation.
  • Possess a fingerprint check.

Special Skills & Training

Must meet applicable Michigan Commission On Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) requirements related to vision & hearing at the time of hire.

Work Schedule

  • Work hours will be 24 to 40 hours per week.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts on a 7 day a week, 24 hour per day basis, including holidays.
  • Overtime may be required to maintain minimum staffing hours.

Pay

Hourly Rate: $20.00 per hour, with the opportunity to receive tuition reimbursement up to $3,500 per year towards an Associate Degree. Police Academy sponsorship based on merit.

Schedule

This position is not eligible for benefits.
