Job Summary

The Police Cadet position is a non-sworn, developmental role within the University Medical Center Police Department. It is designed to introduce students and aspiring law enforcement professionals to public safety operations in a healthcare academic environment. Under close supervision, cadets perform a variety of support duties and receive exposure to the complexities of law enforcement in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary medical campus.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Must be 18 years of age

Certifications, Licenses, Or Registrations

  • Valid US Driver’s License
  • Completion of a pre-employment drug screen required

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong interest in healthcare security, law enforcement, or public service careers
  • Basic understanding of medical center operations and visitor management principles
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; bilingual ability is a plus
  • Capacity to maintain composure in fast-paced, high-stress environments
  • Familiarity with confidentiality requirements (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA)
  • Proficient in basic computer use and mobile communication devices

Responsibilities

  • Support administrative and operational functions including dispatch assistance, report processing, records management, and credentialing
  • Observe sworn officers during routine patrols, patient safety escorts, and response to critical incidents within inpatient, outpatient, and research facilities
  • Provide customer service and wayfinding support for patients, visitors, and staff while maintaining a visible, professional presence
  • Aid with community policing initiatives, outreach events, and security surveys under guidance
  • Participate in scenario-based training, emergency drills, and wellness/fitness development activities
  • Monitor video surveillance systems, access control points, and security systems under supervision
  • Assist in the inspection and stocking of police vehicles, first aid kits, and specialized equipment
  • Uphold departmental confidentiality standards, especially regarding HIPAA-protected environments

  • Frequent exposure to unpleasant or disagreeable physical environment such as high noise level and exposure to heat and cold
  • Frequent handling or working with potentially dangerous equipment
  • Exposure to biohazardous conditions such as risk of radiation exposure, blood borne pathogens, fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals
  • Occasional working hours significantly beyond regularly scheduled hours
