About the role

The role involves performing and training to perform a variety of police field and administrative support functions prior to employment as a Probationary Police Officer. Duties include responding to public requests, investigating crimes, assisting officers, and maintaining equipment.

Responsibilities

• Under close supervision, performs and trains to perform police field and administrative support functions.
• Responds to public requests for non-emergency assistance and information.
• Investigates complaints, gathers information, and writes reports.
• Communicates through law enforcement radio channels and computer networks.
• Performs administrative functions in a precinct or specialized police unit.
• Assists with crowd control and special events.
• Provides routine office support such as sorting and distributing mail, answering and directing telephone calls, and filing.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Requirements

• Must be between the ages of 17 1/2 and 20 years and 4 months to apply.
• Applicants aged 20 years and 4 months or older must apply for the Police Officer position.
• Must be at least 18, but less than 21 years of age at the time of appointment.
• Possess a high school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
• Pass a written examination, physical agility test, physical examination, background investigation, psychological screening, polygraph examination, and a drug test.
• Be a citizen of the United States at the time of appointment.
• Possess a valid driver's license equivalent to a noncommercial, class C Maryland driver's license.
• Have less than four points on their driving record.
• Have no felony convictions.

Conditions of Employment

• This is a training classification. Incumbents in this classification who are not hired as a Police Officer by the start of the second Police Training Academy class for which they are eligible will be terminated.
• Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation: Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.

Salary

Annual Salary review - Step increases may be granted on anniversary date based on satisfactory job performance
General Increases - Cost of living increases and adjustments may be granted as legislated.
Longevity Increases - In accordance with the specific pay schedule, a full-time merit or classified employee may receive a longevity increase, equivalent to one step, upon completion of a certain number of years of classified service with the County.
