About the Role

Under the direction of police leadership, this position performs a variety of critical support duties to assist in the daily operations of the police department.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with conducting background investigations for police personnel.
  • Assist with mental health transports.
  • Assist with maintenance of police grounds, facilities, and equipment.
  • Assist with Property and Evidence operations including data entry.
  • Assist with evidence processing, packaging evidence, and transporting evidence to crime labs.
  • Assist with case dispositions including data entry.
  • Utilize computer programs to research persons and property related to crimes.
  • Operate a city vehicle to travel to various locations needed to conduct thorough background investigations for police personnel.
  • Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • General knowledge of police policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Skill in safely operating a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to perform minor repairs to equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to perform investigative work.
  • Ability to operate power tools and equipment.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information.
  • Ability to interact with persons in crisis.
  • Ability to prepare basic correspondence and mailing labels.
  • Ability to enter and retrieve information from departmental computer systems.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.

Qualifications

Any combination equivalent to experience and training to provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities may be qualifying.

  • Five (5) years of previous law enforcement experience is preferred.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Texas driver’s license; the ability to obtain one within ninety (90) days of employment, or a military waiver is required.
  • Completion of a four (4) hour Background Investigators training course prior to functioning in the role of Background Investigator.
  • Ability to travel to other work locations.

Physical Demands

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:

  • Medium work – lifting no more than 50 pounds; carrying up to 25 pounds.

  • Moderate (60 – 30% of the time): Standing, Sitting, Walking, Fine Dexterity, Kneeling, Crouching, Bending, Twisting, Balancing, Vision, Hearing, Talking.
  • Infrequent (20 – 10% of the time): Lifting, Carrying, Pushing/Pulling, Overhead Work, Crawling, Climbing.
  • Extensive (100 – 70% of the time): Vision, Hearing.
