Podiatrist

Provide prevention, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment, education, and consultation for patients of all ages with foot and ankle disorders, diseases, and injuries. Deliver medical and surgical care for a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including complex disorders, trauma, injuries, and congenital abnormalities. Detect early signs of systemic diseases and other foot conditions that may impact overall health. Perform pre-operative histories and physical exams and may admit patients in accordance with MTF policy.

Responsibilities

• Work under the general supervision of the Chief, Podiatry, who discusses policies and objectives.
• Exercise independent judgment in selecting and performing a full range of diagnostic evaluations for patients.
• Participate in established peer (other medical specialist) review process monthly.
• Provide chart review for quality assurance purposes in the area of neurology if requested on an occasional basis.
• Attend and participate in patient care reports, patient care conferences, team conferences, professional staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities related to assigned cases.
• Examine, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries of the foot and ankle by surgical and conservative means.
• Provide comprehensive medical and surgical management of disorders of the foot and ankle, including examination, diagnosis, medical and surgical treatment, prevention, and care.
• Prepare and review case histories and obtain data through interviews.
• Examine patients and determine required x-ray examinations and clinical laboratory tests.
• Interpret test results and evaluate examination findings.
• Determine procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and prescribe orthotics.
• Perform surgical procedures and coordinate care with civilian anesthesia providers and hospitals.
• Reduce and immobilize fractures by open or closed methods, using corrective devices such as braces, casts, splints, and surgical implants.
• Administer and prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, pain, and other medications.
• Direct nurses in procedures for preoperative and postoperative care and operating room techniques.
• Advise on kind and quantity of podiatric supplies and equipment.
• Coordinate podiatric services with other medical activities.
• Serve as consultant to MTF staff on podiatric conditions.
• Complete appropriate military-specific documentation such as narrative medical summaries, convalescent leave, and duty-limiting conditions (medical profile) paperwork.
• Maintain knowledge of computer operations in the use of basic word processing, data entry, and automated medical records.
• Perform duties at UCHealth and Centura Health hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers under the direction of the MTF.
• Maintain regular and punctual attendance.
• Supervise and mentor other project staff members.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Successfully completed a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) degree from an accredited college or university of podiatric medicine.
• Successfully completed a 24-month podiatric surgical residency.
• Maintains current board certification or is board eligible through the American Board of Podiatric Surgery or the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine.
• Must possess and maintain an active, current, valid, and unrestricted license from a US jurisdiction to practice independently within the defined scope of practice for their specialty.
• Must have a minimum of 24 months in the last 36 months of documented current clinical independent experience and competency.
• Podiatry Surgical Activity Logs for the last 24 months are required for validation of demonstrated current clinical competency.
• Must be able to safely execute the responsibilities of their specialty without significant medical or mental conditions that impair ability.
• Must possess and maintain current Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support if applicable.
• Must not have any reported allegations of misconduct to external regulatory agencies where there is reasonable cause.
• Must be able to read, understand, speak, and write English fluently.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.

Schedule

Full-time. May be required to work additional hours as needed to complete assignment or project.

Travel

All Market contractors are subject to working at a duty location at any of the MTFs or associated sub-clinics within the Colorado Military Health System (CMHS).

Work Environment

Work is performed primarily indoors at a well-lit military treatment facility such as a clinic, outpatient facility, or hospital. The environment is normally air-conditioned but may vary. Work may need to be performed in a fast-paced environment requiring quick thinking and rapid judgments. Exposure to bloodborne pathogens, bodily fluids, latex, radiation, or other contaminants and safety issues. May be exposed to infections or diseases from patient contact. Work is highly social and can be stressful with a high emotional element. Decisions made may substantially impact patients and their families. Provider may perform duties at Memorial Hospitals and the Penrose St Francis Health Care System.

Physical Demands

Position consists of sitting for long periods, using hands/fingers, handling, reaching with hands and arms, speaking, or translating. Periods of walking, standing, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and lifting boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Moderate to extended periods of office work with heavy computer usage. May require occasional to moderate periods of analytical tasks requiring extensive reasoning abilities.
