About the role

The Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Aviation Administration (MDOT MAA) is seeking a Plumber (Skilled Trade Specialist II) at the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Marshall Airport).

Responsibilities

  • Installing, repairing, and maintaining plumbing and natural gas equipment, piping, valves, and fittings in compliance with the Maryland State and International Plumbing Codes.
  • Installation and repairs to showers, lavatories, water closets, faucets, and urinals.
  • Fitting copper pipes and fittings using assorted flux, solder, and brazing materials.
  • Using different types of gases (i.e., map, and acetylene) to fit and cut copper and steel pipes.
  • Installing steel, water, natural gas by using power threaders and groves to cut, thread, and grove the ends of the piping.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing sewage ejector pumps, motors, and controls.
  • Performing physical exertion both indoors and outdoors, including moving objects weighing over 50 pounds.
  • Maintaining essential employee status and being available for emergency call-backs.
  • Working in a 24-hour facility and rotating shifts, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Experience: Three years of experience performing skilled trade work in plumbing, with two years involving service and repair of various plumbing hardware in the commercial and residential setting.
  • Licenses & Certifications: Valid Maryland driver’s license.

Qualifications

  • Additional work experience performing skilled trades as defined above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • A certificate from a vocational-technical school with a major in one or more of the skilled trades as defined above may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utility repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in the skilled trades as defined above the field of work, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.
