About the role

The New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is the largest organization in the United States dedicated to preventing and addressing homelessness. In partnership with other City Agencies and Nonprofit Organizations, DHS works to prevent homelessness before it begins, reduces street homelessness, provides temporary shelter, and connects individuals and families to stable housing—all with a focus on accountability, empathy, and equity. The Facilities and Logistics Division (F&L) is responsible for providing direct and indirect maintenance and repair services to City-owned and operated facilities using in-house skilled trade-workers, maintenance contracts, and purchasing operations. F&L monitors DHS shelters to maintain building systems, guides shelter staff on improving facility conditions, and ensures funds are spent on preventive and general maintenance to avoid premature failure of building systems.

Responsibilities

• Install, repair, and maintain plumbing systems including piping of all kinds, fittings, fixtures, and drainage systems.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and specifications to determine the layout of plumbing systems.
• Inspect plumbing systems and identify issues such as leaks, clogs, or worn parts.
• Repair or replace broken pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing components.
• Test plumbing systems for leaks and other problems.
• Collaborate with contractors, construction workers, and other professionals on plumbing installation projects.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal plumbing codes and regulations.
• Provide estimates for plumbing work and order necessary materials and supplies.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, including details of repairs and installations.
• Respond to plumbing emergencies and provide timely, effective solutions.
• Stay up-to-date with the latest plumbing techniques, tools, and technologies.
• Operate a motor vehicle.

Requirements

Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber acquired within the last ten years; or not less than three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a plumber plus sufficient full-time experience as a plumber’s helper or apprentice, or relevant training acquired in an approved trade school, technical school, or vocational high school, to make up the equivalent of five years of acceptable plumber experience. The apprenticeship must be recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or any apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor. The schooling must be approved by a state’s Department of Education or comparable agency. Each year of helper or apprentice experience, or approved schooling, is equivalent to six months of satisfactory plumber experience, up to a maximum of two years.

You must possess a motor vehicle driver license valid in the State of New York at the time of appointment and maintain it for the duration of employment. Candidates with moving violations, license suspension, or an accident record may be disqualified.

Preferred Skills

• Good physical condition and the ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
• Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, materials, and equipment.
• Additional certifications or training in specialized plumbing areas.
• Experience with modern plumbing technologies and green plumbing practices.
• Previous experience in both residential and commercial plumbing environments.
• Knowledge of sprinkler systems.

Monday – Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Pay

$448.00 per day

This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program. Public Service Loan Forgiveness may be available for prospective employees of the City of New York. New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment, though certain City Employees may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County after two continuous years of service.
