Plumber

About the role

Plumber demonstrates the ability to teach, learn and apply trade skills. This position inspects, repairs and replaces pipes, fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain heating, cooling, pneumatic, water, gas and drainage systems. Responsible for troubleshooting plumbing systems and ensuring work meets specifications and codes. Works with outside vendors, reports discrepancies to management, and ensures that all mechanical logs and reports are completed accurately and timely. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance (PM) tasks on equipment, examine for wear and tear, and make required repairs as needed.
• Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations.
• Inspect structures to ascertain obstructions and prevent weakening of structure resulting from pipe installation.
• Locate and mark positions of pipe and pipe connections, and passage holes for pipes in walls and floors.
• Cut, bend, thread, and fit pipe using pipe assemblies; caulk leaks and open clogged drains.
• Join pipes using screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, caulking, Victaulic connectors, welding, soldering, brazing, or other prescribed methods.
• Repair and service plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners.
• Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with engineering specifications and local building codes.
• Estimate time and material costs on plumbing projects.
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment; keep tools and equipment in good working condition.
• Complete required documentation for both the company and the client in a timely, legible, and accurate manner.
• Receive and apply company-provided training (e.g., Lock Out Tag Out, Confined Space Entry, Blood Borne Pathogen, Safety, Accident Reporting and Prevention).
• Report unsafe working conditions to the appropriate level as required.
• Demonstrate ability to put fire systems in bypass and reset them as needed; reset fire panels and determine actual trouble and alarm events.
• Replace tile, re-plaster, or paint walls through which holes have been broken to access plumbing.
• Work in inclement weather if the need arises.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Valid Driver’s License.
• Education in plumbing or equivalent experience.
• Commercial, industrial, or institutional experience within a healthcare facility on building maintenance and repair of complex environmental systems preferred.
• Knowledge of building codes, state requirements, healthcare regulatory standards, and Joint Commission compliance.
• Knowledge of Occupational Hazards and Safety Precautions within various trades.
• Ability to read and interpret architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings.

Skills

• Apply basic and advanced skills using tools and equipment appropriate for the position.
• Effectively communicate policies and procedures in a manner easily understood by others (verbal and written English skills required).
• Simple mathematical ability (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and understanding of concepts such as diameter, radius, and circumference.
• Good sense of mechanical systems and understanding of safe and efficient operation concepts.

Physical Demands

• Climb and work in hot or cold environments within OSHA and other applicable jurisdiction regulations.
• Perform confined space entry via manhole or other available ingress/egress points.
• Lift up to 50 pounds and perform all required range of motions normally expected of a person performing maintenance work.
• Work in strained positions, including standing, sitting, crouching, or lying prone while using hand and power tools.
• Wear prescribed safety equipment, including safety shoes.
• Reach with hands, arms, and fingers; communicate via speech and hearing while working.
• Vision requirements: close work, distance, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus for changing light conditions.
• Work whatever hours are necessary to maintain facility safety, including weekends and nights.
