About the role

The City of Saginaw is seeking a skilled Maintenance Mechanic to join our Water Treatment Plant team. The position involves troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Repair and maintain pumps, valves, generators, air compressors, diesel and internal combustion engines, and other water treatment plant equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and repair chemical feed pumps and related systems.
  • Operate machine tools, including lathes, milling machines, and drill presses.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Vocational/technical training in industrial electrical/mechanical maintenance preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in mechanical maintenance and equipment repair.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan Operator’s License.
  • Proficiency in machinist tasks, including part fabrication, and skilled in electric and gas welding and cutting methods.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems, welding principles, and safe work practices, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, mechanical drawings, and blueprints; capable of designing and engineering projects from conception to completion.
  • Basic computer literacy with ability to learn Microsoft Office Programs (Word, Excel, and Outlook) and maintenance software.
  • Acceptable attendance and work record as determined by management.

Qualifications

  • Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts.
  • Occasional working at heights, outdoors in varying weather conditions, or in confined spaces with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; and the risk of electrical shock.
  • Use of vibrating tools.
  • Protective equipment such as Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, respirators, masks, goggles, and gloves may be required.
  • Frequent exposure to noise levels (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth moving equipment).
