Examples of Duties
- Performs plan review of commercial and residential construction plans submitted for permitting.
- Assigns inspections based on certifications held by the employee.
- Advises owners and contractors on the provisions of the codes and ordinances governing construction and on modifications necessary to meet requirements.
- Advises owners and contractors on FEMA rules regarding construction in special flood hazard areas.
- Reads and interprets blueprints and specifications for building code compliance.
Qualifications
- High school graduation or equivalent (GED).
- College or vocational training in building construction, mechanical installation, electrical installation, or plumbing installation (Preferred).
- A minimum of four (4) years as an inspector, plans examiner, engineer, architect, superintendent, foreman, or competent mechanic in charge.
- Must have hands-on experience in the specific trades and/or disciplines required for the position.
Required Competencies
- Knowledge of the methods and practices involved in all phases of building construction possible faults and defects and corrective procedures.
- Knowledge of state, regional, and national construction codes.
- Ability to gain knowledge of local ordinances, department and county policies, procedures, and practices.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints, and specifications efficiently, and to compare with work in progress during inspections.
- Ability to make independent technical judgment decisions within existing policy guidelines.
- Ability to create and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, owners, contractors, and other interested parties.
- Ability to create and maintain the necessary filing systems for proper internal control.
- Ability to participate in procedures and provide technical input to advisory groups.
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
- Sitting most of the day.
- Frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 30 pounds.
- Frequent bending, twisting, and occasional squatting, climbing, kneeling, and balancing.
- Simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, and typing.
- Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
