Planning Technician
An employee in this class performs entry-level and routine planning technician work, supporting community members with zoning and City planning services while improving the customer experience.
Responsibilities
- Provide technical planning support, including coordinating land use applications, logging data, tracking deadlines, preparing correspondence, and routing notices and maps.
- Review, maintain, update, and query automated data systems related to mapping, addressing, and land use; assist staff with system-related questions and recommend data management enhancements.
- Respond to customer inquiries about zoning and land use development; research records, provide zoning regulation information, and issue zoning verification documentation.
- Serve as the primary contact for address management and provide assistance related to it.
- Review over-the-counter permit applications against approval criteria; log applications, process permit requests, or refer them to a Planner for additional review.
- Update and maintain activity reports, procedure manuals, land use applications, files, databases, brochures, maps, department website content, and documents.
- Perform other duties of a similar nature as assigned.

Requirements
- Associate’s degree in computer applications, geographic information systems, urban and land use planning, or a related field, plus six months of experience in database management software and municipal planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.

Bilingual Incentive Pay: Employees who demonstrate proficiency in Spanish, ASL, or another language spoken by over 10% of City residents (per U.S. Census) receive a 3% monthly premium pay. Proficiency is determined by a City-administered test.
