Pipeline Operations Technician

Qualifications

• Degree or certificate in Process Technology, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Chemical Engineering; equivalent applicable experience as operations or maintenance tech may be considered.
• 2-5 years of experience as a pipeline operator or technician; recent graduates (within 12 months) in the noted disciplines may be considered.
• Proficiency in computer applications such as GIS, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

• Frequently lift or carry moderately heavy equipment up to 50 pounds.
• Perform tasks requiring working, stooping, kneeling, bending, climbing, and walking distances in all types of terrain.
• Stand, sit, walk, stoop, kneel, or crouch for extended periods of time.
• Work with or near hazardous chemicals.
• Operate personal computer for extended periods.
• Work outdoors in weather extremes and near equipment with potentially high noise levels.
• Respond to emergency calls and/or callouts, returning to work while off duty.
• Work extended hours (scheduled and/or unscheduled, nights and/or weekends) as needed to meet deadlines.
• May be assigned to swing or night shift based on business requirements.
• Work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing, stooping, reaching, pulling, pushing, twisting, bending, kneeling, crawling, and grasping.
• Work in areas with limited access or cramped spaces; climb ladders, walkways, and scaffolds.
• Use hand and power tools for equipment and right-of-way maintenance.
• May be required to wear SCBA and/or become fit-tested for a respirator (requires face to be clean-shaven).

Responsibilities

• Understand, practice, and lead by example Mid-Alaska Pipeline, LLC's commitment to zero-incident safety and environmental culture.
• Comply with pipeline safety and environmental regulations.
• Monitor and ensure pipeline conditions and issues are addressed in a timely manner.
• Demonstrate understanding of mechanical operations for equipment such as ball valves, gate valves, relief valves, meters, instrumentation, and other pipeline-related equipment.
• Identify, report, and initiate immediate actions to correct abnormal operating conditions associated with pipeline assets within standard parameters.
• Evaluate and develop procedures such as pigging, startup, purging, isolation, pipeline repair, operations & maintenance, and emergency shutdown procedures.
• Evaluate pipeline system and equipment performance and initiate standard adjustments as needed.
• Assist in troubleshooting and analysis of complex operational issues, including valves, strainers, inhibitor injections, pumps, meters, pressure/temperature gauges/transmitters, computational pipeline monitoring (leak detection system), and other pipeline-related equipment.
• Complete line-locate requests in accordance with damage prevention regulations, utilizing line locating equipment.
• Conduct routine monitoring, inspection, and maintenance of pipeline assets, including facility inspections, right-of-way (ROW) inspections, ROW maintenance, valve inspection/maintenance, meter run maintenance, valve operation, draining pipeline segments, and verifying operating conditions (e.g., pressures, temperatures, volumes, cathodic protection).
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and respond to callouts for leak detection system alarms.
• Conduct and review routine patrols of ROWs to ensure no encroachments or construction activities potentially affect pipeline assets.
• Assist in meter proving.
• Maintain ROW in winter using plow trucks, snow blowers, and hand shoveling for snow removal at key access and inspection points.
• Maintain ROW in summer using lawn mowing and brush clearing equipment.
• Be available 24/7 for emergency response.
• Assist in maintaining all records and reports required for compliance purposes.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude in the use of hand and pneumatic tools.
• Ability to gain comprehensive knowledge of the overall operations and maintenance of a crude oil pipeline system and associated equipment, including valves, meters, strainers, pressure/temperature gauges, chemical injection, isolation, purging, venting, pipeline repairs, system shutdown and startup, cathodic protection, inspections, and spill response mitigation.
• Ability to read and comprehend technical operational manuals.
• Understanding of metering and proving concepts.
• Understanding of Computational Pipeline Monitoring systems.
• Math and computer skills to calculate flows, temperature/pressure differences, and proficiency in computational pipeline monitoring software.
• Valid driver’s license to drive company vehicles.
• Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English.
• Organized and proficient in record keeping.
• Must possess or obtain operator qualifications as deemed by the Pipeline Director and complete Haz-Mat training, safety programs, and meet DOT requirements.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills for working in a team environment.
• Ability to work alone with minimal supervision.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position may be required to monitor, inspect, and document contractors' work on pipeline facilities at the direction of the Pipeline Operations Supervisor.
