Pima CARES Health Promotion Specialist

About the Role

This position focuses on health promotion and community outreach within the Tucson Urban Indian community, emphasizing prevention and education related to substance abuse, opioid use, and overall well-being.

Responsibilities

• Conduct community outreach to attract clients for health promotion services.
• Design, deliver, and document educational workshops for youth, adults, and elders on healthy lifestyle topics, with a focus on substance abuse and opioid prevention.
• Develop culturally appropriate educational and outreach materials for the Tucson Urban Indian community.
• Present on health and well-being topics aligned with the TIC Wellness Department’s scope of work.
• Refer clients to Wellness Department services, including intake, eligibility determination, case plan development, and monitoring.
• Establish and maintain relationships with community organizations and partners to coordinate services and follow up on referrals.
• Prepare monthly activity reports for the Wellness Grants & Services Manager.
• Participate as part of the Tucson Indian Center staff team.
• Engage in a professional development plan, including mentoring, in-service training, and continuing education.
• Support Community Room operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

• Knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention practices, particularly regarding behavioral health issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS, STIs, and teen pregnancy prevention.
• Understanding of community-based health programs and American Indian health issues, including Urban Indian and Tribal health, and the role of the Indian Health Service.
• Experience and interest in working directly with youth, adults, and elder members of the American Indian Tucson community.
• Respect for and familiarity with American Indian cultures and traditions.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to work proactively with limited supervision and as part of a team.
• Professionalism in maintaining positive relationships with staff and clients, handling confidential information, and upholding client confidentiality standards.
