Physician-Supervisory Psychiatry

About the role

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (1-5 YEARS) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Responsibilities

• Performs psychiatric evaluations for a diverse population, including geriatric and post deployment combat Veterans, who are mentally ill and have psychosocial issues such as homelessness, unemployment, and poor family support network.
• Provides a full range of therapeutic interventions including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, psychotherapy, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders.
• Ensures practice of psychiatric medicine is consistent with TJC, CARF, HIPPA, VA policies and procedures, clinical practice guidelines, national statutes and regulations, medical record documentation, and mandatory continuing education.
• Maintains appropriate licensing and board certifications as applicable.
• Participates effectively in team meetings and collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to enhance coordination of comprehensive patient care.
• Functioning as part of a psychiatric care team working with other physicians, PA's, APN's, nurses, Psychologist, LCSW & other team members. Works as collaborating physician with PA's and APN's as necessary.
• Orders diagnostic tests and consultations. Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and makes appropriate treatment decisions.
• Outpatient: 1 hour provided for new patients, 30 minutes for follow ups.
• Inpatient (if applicable): working with interdisciplinary team including PA, SW, nursing, and others on inpatient unit. Management of psychiatric inpatients from admit to discharge, with assistance of PA's. Documentation including psychiatric evaluations, suicide risk assessments, daily progress notes, and others as applicable. Covering of inpatient consults may be required.
• Provide administrative supervision to a team of MH providers at assigned location.
• Duties will include clinical and administrative work in the outpatient clinics at assigned location.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Board Certified/Eligible in Psychiatry.
• Providing Mental Health Care through Telehealth modalities.
• Participation as a member of multi-disciplinary treatment team providing a full range of Mental Health Service to patients.
• Demonstrates a high level of practice using evidence-based medicine principles involving patients who have complex illnesses.
• Excellent customer service skills (internal and external customers).
