Physician (Psychiatrist) Deputy Chief

Responsibilities

• Organizes, directs, administers, and manages assigned aspects of the Substance Use Disorder/Opiate Treatment Program Subdivision of the Mental Health department across Greater Los Angeles VA HCS.
• Collaborates with the Chief - SUD Subdivision - in the implementation of Joint Commission standards and facilitation of Joint Commission readiness for SUD programs including intensive outpatient programs and opioid treatment programs.
• Participates in many Mental Health & hospital wide committees - including MH Steering Committee, SAIL Committees, CBOC Communities of Practice (to facilitate SUD treatment and promote best practices in CBOCs), Training Committees, and the Overdose Review Committee.
• Teaching - May participate in supervision of psychiatry residents and may assist in organizing resident training in the SUD program.
• Address clinic operation needs as it relates to resident training.
• Provide direct patient care services to Veterans in the section and at other sites within GLA.
• Participate in same day access and other co-located collaborative duties with other staff assigned by the service.
• Perform direct in-person or virtual assessments and treatment, when indicated.
• Attend huddles for informal consultation and education of the team.
• Bear overall responsibility for the MH treatment of the Veteran.
• Collaborate with the client/family to establish physical, mental, cultural, and environmental factors that facilitate or impede realistic goals and activities.
• Determine potential needs for therapeutic changes, diagnostic workups, or subspecialty consultation.
• Order and/or interpret appropriate laboratory tests, x-rays, and other relevant diagnostic studies and procedures.
• Review medications for clinical need, simplification, and possible drug-drug interactions and adjust as indicated.
• Prescribe, administer, and review/evaluate Veteran's response to pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment regimens.
• Provide education and counseling of the Veteran and the Veteran's family in preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
• Develop a safety plan with the veteran when indicated.
• Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation - Supervise the Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations of all Mental Health staff in the section.
• Submit recommendations for performance bonuses.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine.
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current - full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State - Territory - or Commonwealth of the United States - or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education - the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - in the list published for the year the residency - or fellowship if applicable - was completed.
• (2) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States.
• (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement).
• Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education - the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - in the list published for the year the residency - or fellowship if applicable - was completed OR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United States OR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement).
