About the role

The Ambulatory Care Section of the Reno VA Medical Center provides care in various outpatient settings including Main Campus, East Campus, North Campus, Lahontan Valley, Diamond View, and Carson Valley Community Based Outpatient Clinic's (CBOCs), as well as, Winnemucca Outreach Clinic. Walk-in Evaluation Clinic provides episodic interventions for patients with complaints ranging from administrative problems up to and including urgent clinical needs. The clinic services provide scheduled appointments for new and returning primary care for large numbers of veterans seen in and followed with in the Health Care System for a wide variety of common medical and psychiatric problems.

Responsibilities

  • Provides comprehensive primary care to a panel of eligible veterans, treating a wide variety of medical conditions including but not limited to hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, coronary artery disease, neurological disorders, endocrine disorders, dermatological conditions, and more.
  • Assesses patients to determine the nature of the disease process and provides appropriate treatment, instruction, and consultation as needed.
  • Follows up for inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, performs eye and dental evaluations, monitors anti-coagulation, manages chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, degenerative arthritis, depression, and geriatric problems.
  • Provides referrals to specialty clinics and the emergency department when clinically indicated, and follows up as necessary.
  • Emphasizes preventative health screenings for veteran patients.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Benefits

Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP)

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
