About the role

Bronson Children's Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan is seeking a part-time BC/BE Pediatric Critical Care Physician who has successfully completed a fellowship in Pediatric Critical Care.

  • Pediatric Intensivists co-manage pediatric traumas and sedations
  • Teaching opportunities with Bronson-Western Michigan University School of Medicine, which partners closely with Bronson physicians and offers nine residency programs including pediatrics, family medicine, and med/peds
  • Transport services for patients referred from 19 regional hospitals conducted by ambulance under the supervision of a specially trained transport nurse
  • Bronson’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is an eight-bed unit and the area's only PICU, plus a four-bed Pediatric Step-Down Unit (PSDU), serving a nine-county area in southwest Michigan
  • Bronson is the only hospital providing pediatric inpatient services in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek areas

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose illnesses and prescribe/administer treatment for patients suffering from disease or illness
  • Examine patients and obtain medical histories
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Counsel patients regarding preventive healthcare, hygiene, and diet
  • Provide medical patient care by interviewing, examining, and treating clinical patients
  • Educate patients on wellness, prevention, and early detection by providing materials and resources
  • Determine required referrals based on examination and patient needs, including urgency of follow-up and consultation appointments
  • Exercise final medical judgment in all healthcare issues
  • Prescribe medical treatment and clinical drugs
  • Order studies, tests, and ancillary services
  • Document all services in patient medical records
  • Review long-term cases requiring ongoing medical attention
  • Consult with Medical Director and other professionals on patient care, assessment, and education issues
  • Participate in process improvement, management, continuing education, and other patient care programs
  • Oversee mid-level medical staff and nursing clinical staff as assigned
  • Assist in resolving patient complaints, requests, and inquiries
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient information according to federal guidelines
  • Demonstrate commitment to providing outstanding customer service reflective of Bronson’s mission, values, and standards

Requirements

  • BC/BE in Pediatrics (American Board of Pediatrics)
  • Graduate from an ACGME-accredited program
  • Current or pending unrestricted medical license in the state of Michigan
  • Current DEA and DPS Certificate of Registration
  • Medical degree and 2 years of direct or intern experience
  • Must maintain all requirements for medical staff privileges
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures, and techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents used in patient treatment
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with proper telephone etiquette
  • Ability to perform in a tactful and professional manner

Work involves:

  • High levels of mental/visual fatigue, including interactive and repetitive tasks requiring sustained alertness and concentration
  • Operation of and attention to a personal computer or CRT between 40 and 70 percent of the time
  • Considerable standing or walking, regular lifting of light-weight objects (20 pounds or less), and assisting with heavier tasks such as lifting and moving patients
  • Assuming minor straining or fatiguing positions and performing fatiguing physical motions
