Physician - Hematology/Oncology - EDRP and Recruitment/Relocation Incentive May be Offered

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed below. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree: Doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
    • Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
    • Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
    For foreign medical graduates not covered above, facility officials must confirm that the medical school meets (or met) Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.
  • License: Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The physician must maintain current registration in the state of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies are:
    • Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) in the list published for the year the residency or fellowship was completed, or
    • One year of post-medical school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States, or
    • Non-U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States performing duties related to the position, which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems appropriate.
    Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA-accredited residency programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs) on an intermittent basis and under supervision. Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.

Grandfathering Provision: Employees in VHA in this occupation under a permanent, appropriate, and legal placement on the effective date of the qualification standard are considered to have met all basic requirements. Employees who do not meet all requirements but met qualifications at the time of their initial appointment may transfer or be reassigned within VA. Those appointed temporarily prior to the effective date may not have their appointment extended or be reappointed until they fully meet the requirements.

Preferred Experience

  • Board Certified/Eligible in Hematology and Oncology with broad knowledge of hematological and oncologic disorders.
  • Extensive expertise and experience in clinical teaching.
  • Extensive experience in graduate medical education, clinical research, or quality improvement.
  • 5+ years of clinical, supervisory, or administrative experience.
  • Knowledge of general and VA computer clinical software programs.
  • Eligible for UTSW faculty appointment.

Physical Requirements

  • Light lifting (under 15 pounds).

Responsibilities

Hematology/Oncology core privileges include:

  • Admitting, history, and physical.
  • Performing simple manual waived testing.
  • Preparing treatment plans.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions of the following body systems: cardiovascular, circulatory, dermatologic, endocrine, gastrointestinal, gynecologic, hematological, immune, infectious, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological, psychiatric, pulmonary, renal, and rheumatologic.
  • Administration of parenteral fluids, medications, and blood products.
  • Application of restraints.
  • Arterial blood gas sampling.
  • Arthrocentesis.
  • Bone marrow biopsy/aspirate.
  • Cleaning and dressing wounds.
  • Cultures.
  • ECG interpretation.
  • Endotracheal intubation (emergency only).
  • Incision and drainage of superficial abscess.
  • Injection of bursa.
  • Interpretation of pulmonary function tests.
  • Intravenous catheterization.
  • Lumbar puncture.
  • Oxygen administration.
  • Paracentesis.
  • Pericardiocentesis (emergent).
  • Phlebotomy.
  • Subclavian puncture.
  • Suturing minor lacerations.
  • Thoracentesis.
  • Urethral catheterization.
  • Manage and monitor patients on chemotherapy and in surveillance for cancer.
  • Cancer chemotherapy.
  • Perform initial evaluation and management of patients with chemotherapy-induced infusion reactions.

Schedule

Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm.
