Physician (Geriatrics)-Service Chief

About the role

The Chief of Geriatrics & Extended Care Service (GEC) is responsible for the provision of all Geriatric and Extended Care services at West Palm Beach VA Medical Center. They report directly to the Chief of Staff or his designee.

Responsibilities

• Develops, organizes, directs, manages, supervises, controls and implements policies and procedures.
• Has full responsibility for developing and directing geriatric educational and training programs; sets training objectives.
• Reviews clinic grids and scheduling practices of outpatient geriatrics clinics and admitting practices of Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) and the Community Living Center (CLC) on a regular basis to find opportunities to increase access to these services.
• The role of the Chief includes the provision of clinical care in geriatric services.
• Ensures the administrative and clinical supervision of GEC staff in their professional role, in a variety of inpatient and outpatient program areas and clinics.
• Oversees all geriatric activities within the medical center ensuring that educational and quality geriatric care needs of Veterans are met.
• Teaches 2 fellowships, Geriatrics and Hospice and Palliative care. The service also has medicine residents and medical students that rotate through the department.

Requirements

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
• Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Board Certification in Geriatrics is required, additional boards in, Palliative Care/Hospice Care are preferred.
• Advanced clinical, administrative, and leadership experience is preferred.
• Physical Requirements: Must pass a pre-employment physical examination as required by VA Handbook 5019.
