Physician (Gastroenterology)

About the role

The West Palm Beach VA Medical Center Specialty Care Service is seeking an experienced and dynamic Gastroenterologist. Ideal applicants are those who want to contribute to the achievement of quality care standards as well as the growth and development of a VA academic hospital program.

Responsibilities

• Communicate diagnosis and plan of care to the gastroenterology patient both directly and document in the CPRS progress notes
• Follow up on pathology results from GI biopsies and communicate these results to the patient
• Admit, work up, diagnose, and provide non-surgical treatment including consultation for patients admitted or needing care to treat general medical problems
• Collaborate in providing care for Liver and Pancreas transplant patients, including timely submission of required referral documentation
• Perform history/physical exams, assessments, and care plans, and obtain patient consent for GI endoscopy procedures
• Operate or direct operations of Fluoroscopic equipment for medical procedures
• Afford assistance in ensuring the Gastroenterology service meets national accreditation standards
• Be actively involved in teaching residents and students, and periodically direct Noon Conferences for their didactic training
• Participate in the educational programs for Gastroenterology and physician personnel as well as the medical staff, including a minimum once a year Medical Grand Rounds presentation

Requirements

• Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the United States
• Completion of residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology fellowship
• Experience in post-medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA, followed by two years of post-training independent practice in the United States
• Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States
• Approved residencies include those approved by the ACGME or AOA
• Ability to lift up to 44 lbs., carry objects up to 15 lbs., reach above shoulder, use hands and legs, use cranes and motor vehicles, walk up to 8 hours, bend, climb, and hear whispers
• Physician must be physically, emotionally, and mentally stable to efficiently perform essential functions without hazard to themselves or others

Qualifications

• Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship, Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in the United States, Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine, Completed residency training in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology fellowship, Board certified in Gastroenterology
• Additional Requirements: Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia, Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program in Internal Medicine AND Gastroenterology fellowship leading to eligibility for board certification, Approved residencies include those approved by the ACGME or AOA, Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States, Surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs, Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs), PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e. - not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged rather - they are to have a ""scope of practice"" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision, Exceptions: Requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience, accomplishments, performance, and qualifications warrant such action, can be submitted by the Facility Director to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer, Proficiency in spoken and written English, Board certified in Gastroenterology, Reference: For more information on this qualification standard - please visit https://www.va.gov/ohrm/QualificationStandards/Physical Requirements: This position requires moderate lifting up to 44 lbs., carrying objects up to 15 lbs., frequent reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, hands and legs, use of cranes and motor vehicles, walking & standing up to 8 hours, bending and climbing and able to hear whisper, Incumbent must be physically, emotionally, and mentally stable in order to efficiently perform the essential functions of this position without hazard to themselves or others

Schedule

Monday - Friday - 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (Note: Work schedules are determined and approved by the supervisor. The incumbent may be required to work various shifts on a permanent or temporary basis based on facility/patient care needs).
