Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner - Inpatient Neurosurgery

About the Role

Join a team-oriented group of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) caring for neurosurgery patients on the floor and in the ICU. The Inpatient Neurosurgery NP/PA will work on a primary service with a rotating schedule of three 12-hour shifts, predominantly weekdays, managing 8-10 patients per shift. Common diagnoses include CNS tumors, movement disorders, intracranial hemorrhages, and spine pathology. This role offers involvement in many aspects of neurosurgical care, including initial diagnosis, treatment, preoperative, and postoperative care.

Opportunities for learning include teaching on rounds, weekly conferences, monthly staff meetings, and clinical care conferences.

Responsibilities

• Provide routine care and management of patients with acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with a supervising physician, following standardized procedures.
• Evaluate and treat patients with acute, chronic, and health maintenance concerns related to the specialty.
• Obtain complete histories and perform pertinent physical exams with assessment of normal and abnormal findings.
• Perform or request and evaluate diagnostic studies as indicated upon patient evaluation.
• Administer, order, furnish, and prescribe medications according to written standardized procedures.
• Order and collect specimens for routine laboratory tests, screening, and therapeutic procedures, including blood and blood products.
• Order physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, radiology examinations, and nursing services.
• Perform designated procedures after demonstrated competency.
• Obtain informed consent as indicated.
• Initiate arrangements for hospital admissions and discharges, completing appropriate paperwork.
• Enroll patients in investigational studies approved by the IRB and order necessary tests and medications, as directed by the supervising physician.
• Assist the supervising physician in the operating room after appropriate training.
• Recognize and address age-specific needs of patients.
• Effectively communicate and interact with patients, families, staff, and community members from diverse backgrounds.
• Identify situations requiring immediate physician attention and initiate life-saving procedures when necessary.
• Facilitate coordination of inpatient and outpatient care and services.
• Collaborate with providers and coordinate community resources.
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and clinical policies and procedures.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Provide and coordinate patient teaching and counseling.

Requirements

• Experience as an APP working in inpatient neurosurgery (ideal). Prior inpatient/ICU experience as an APP or ICU experience as an RN will also be considered.
• Master’s or Doctoral degree in nursing from an accredited college or university (NPs hired prior to March 1, 2012, are exempt).
• Graduate of an NP program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Qualifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) licensure and/or compact state licensure.
• Nurse Practitioner (NP) certification.
• NP Furnishing Number (NPF).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Pay

Generally starting at $89.01 - $117.94 per hour. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on internal equity, experience, education, specialty, and training.

Schedule

• 0.9 FTE part-time.
• Rotating 12-hour shifts, including days, nights, and weekends (predominantly weekdays).
