About the role

The Department of Medicine Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner is a member of the inpatient General Medical Service team. The PA/NP assists attending physicians in the medical management of patients, working within an integrated team that includes residents, medical students, and attendings. The role involves developing and coordinating care plans to meet the physical, psychological, and social needs of patients and their families. Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, along with knowledge of current literature and a commitment to continued learning, are required.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with all teams in the admission of inpatients to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital (BWFH).
  • Assist hospitalist and primary care attending physicians on daily patient rounds to monitor care and formulate treatment plans.
  • Write daily progress notes and implement attending physician instructions for patient management in close cooperation with nursing staff.
  • Perform procedures within the PA/NP scope of practice as directed by the attending.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory testing and other special examinations.
  • Serve as a resource to the healthcare team for patient care issues.
  • Collaborate with care coordinators for all patient care referrals.
  • Prepare accurate sign-out to facilitate smooth transitions of patient care.
  • Assist in planning and implementing patient discharges.
  • Work collaboratively as an efficient member of the healthcare team.
  • Coordinate consultations with other sub-specialists involved in patient care.
  • Provide education to patients and families.
  • Document in the medical record and communicate observations/findings with attending physicians.
  • Monitor environment of care and comply with regulatory agency standards.
  • Ensure clinical practice aligns with PA/APRN policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Participate in QA/QI projects as appropriate.

Requirements

For Physician Assistants (PAs):

  • Successfully completed a Graduate Level, accredited Physician Assistant Program approved by the AMA Board of Approval and Certification of PA programs.
  • 4 years of college-level education and a baccalaureate degree or equivalent (BS/MS joint programs acceptable; BS with PA certificates acceptable for graduates before 1995).
  • Board Certification by the National Commission on Certification of PAs (NCCPA).

For Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs):

  • Completion of a master’s or post-master’s degree in acute care, adult, or family NP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC).
  • Current certification by the American Nurses Credentialing Center or an equivalent body.
  • Current active licensure to practice in the expanded role in Massachusetts.
  • One year of relevant full-time experience as a PA/NP in this specialty preferred but not required.
  • Previous hands-on patient care experience may be considered at the discretion of the Medical Director.
  • Current DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Licenses.
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification required.
  • ACLS certification to be obtained by the end of the probationary period.
  • Completion of BWFH Professionalism Program within 3 months of hire.
  • Completion of BWFH Procedural Sedation Training, if determined necessary.

Schedule

  • Full-time, 12-hour day shifts.
  • Some weekend and holiday coverage required.
  • Rotational coverage for weekends, holidays, and sick calls.
  • Goal of averaging 40 hours per week.

Pay

Annual pay range: $126,837.98 - $173,867.20. The base pay is determined by skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other essential factors. Additional compensation may include differentials, premiums, bonuses, comprehensive benefits, and career advancement opportunities.

Work Location

Onsite at 1153 Centre Street, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital.
