About the role

The malignant hematology oncology Physician Assistant (PA) provides comprehensive ambulatory care to one or more disease-specific medical oncology patient populations. With an interdisciplinary team approach, this provider promotes collaborative relationships between all providers, professional nurses, and administrative staff to ensure continuity of patient care and efficient use of resources. The PA is responsible for the assessment and management of medical malignant hematology oncology patients, including diagnostic and therapeutic interventions and development of appropriate plans of care across the trajectory of illness. The PA assists in providing continuity support during patient admissions to advance the plan of care.

In addition to direct and indirect patient care, the PA serves as a role model for professional advanced practice and participates in the professional development of the team through teaching, committee involvement, or quality and safety initiatives. The role requires operational flexibility, strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills to work effectively with the team.

Responsibilities

  • Performs comprehensive histories and physical examinations.
  • Completes high-quality and timely documentation.
  • Participates in scheduled encounters, maintains capacity for urgent care for complex symptom evaluation and management, and improves access for newly diagnosed hematology oncology patients.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
  • Ensures appropriate diagnostic procedures occur in a timely manner through coordination with services such as radiology, facilitating clinic appointments, communicating test results to patients, and providing team coverage.
  • Performs (or oversees) specialized procedures particular to the medical oncology population, as mutually agreed upon with the collaborating physician.
  • Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with MD) to enhance continuity of care across the trajectory of illness.
  • Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
  • Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.
  • Facilitates and co-manages communications between physicians, patients, family, and staff.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions, including standard-of-care antineoplastics and oncologic investigational new drugs, according to organizational and regulatory policies.
  • Participates in research efforts to advance knowledge and promote research-based practice.
  • Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current healthcare practice and research.
  • Maintains the standards and educational requirements specific to the position and licensure.
  • Appreciates the complex medical environments of cancer patients, including those with advanced malignancy or organ dysfunction and the risk for complex drug interactions.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant studies (required).
  • Current PA license to practice in Massachusetts and DEA registration (required).
  • Minimum 5 years of current licensed Physician Assistant experience caring for an oncology-focused patient population (required).
  • Clinical Physician Assistant experience in an ambulatory practice managing a malignant hematologic oncology-focused patient population (required).
  • Clinical experience ordering and/or administering antineoplastics, immunotherapies, and cellular therapy products (preferred).

Skills

  • Proficiency with Epic EMR.
  • Telemedicine experience.
  • Strong managerial and leadership presence, with the ability to provide and direct feedback and guidance to staff (preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Results-oriented with a strong attention to detail.
  • Expert clinical judgment skills to function independently.
  • Procedural proficiency for hematologic oncologic-specific procedures, including bone marrow biopsy, lumbar puncture, and skin biopsies.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship and communication skills to collaborate with patients’ families, staff, and community health workers.
  • Ability to work with frequent stress resulting from busy clinical settings and changing organizational climates.
  • Self-directive with the ability to demonstrate initiative in addressing responsibilities.
  • Ability to utilize appropriate problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.

Essential Functions

Patient Care Organization

  • Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a select patient population.
  • Performs physical examinations and provides preventive health measures appropriate to patient needs.
  • Orders, interprets, and evaluates lab and diagnostic tests to assess clinical problems and healthcare needs.
  • Arranges for appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on diagnostic outcomes.
  • Performs laboratory tests appropriate for the specific patient population.
  • Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to policies and procedures.
  • Records pertinent patient care findings in the medical record.
  • Sets priorities for efficient management of patient care, reflecting cost-effective use of time, resources, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintains an interdisciplinary approach to planning and communicating patient care information.
  • Incorporates health maintenance, prevention, and promotion into daily practice through patient education and counseling.
  • Demonstrates awareness of community resources and assists staff, patients, and families in utilizing them.

Quality of Care

  • Assists in developing, implementing, and revising physician assistant guidelines and monitoring requirements for prescription writing in collaboration with physician colleagues and the Director.
  • Evaluates outcomes of patient care and revises care plans as necessary.
  • Seeks and provides consultative services as required.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational quality improvement programs.
  • Utilizes quality improvement data and research findings to enhance patient care.

Coordination

  • Demonstrates collaborative and consultative relationships with providers within the institution and community.
  • Serves on Hospital Committees and disseminates information to staff.

Budget

  • Participates in setting productivity metrics and cost-effective management of personnel, time, supplies, and equipment.
  • Collaborates with the Director in recommending appropriate staffing patterns for clinical areas.

Personnel Management

  • Participates in the selection process of new employees in group or team practice as requested.
  • Provides input into the evaluation of other staff as appropriate.

Education

  • Acts as a preceptor for students and staff as requested.
  • Participates in the orientation of new staff.
  • Engages in departmental and organizational continuing education programs.
  • Identifies learning needs and updates clinical knowledge and skills through formal and informal education and literature review.
  • Educates lay and professional groups through lectures, papers, publications, and educational materials.

Planning

  • Develops annual objectives and reviews them with the Director and collaborating providers during performance reviews and at appropriate intervals.
  • Completes the annual credentialing process through the Hospital credentialing program.
  • Assists in determining, evaluating, and implementing clinical area goals and objectives.
  • Maintains an interdisciplinary approach for planning and communicating information for patient care and practice operations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of legislation that may affect the healthcare delivery system.
  • Identifies and integrates patient population and/or disease state in programmatic goals and objectives.

Research

  • Participates in research at a level consistent with educational background and experience.
  • Maintains understanding of current research in related clinical areas through review of relevant publications.
  • Participates in grant writing as appropriate.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • May assume responsibility for providing direction to designated personnel.

Pay

Annual pay range: $126,838.40 - $173,867.20
